Closet Grow Intake/Exhaust Help
    #620080 - 04/25/12 03:01 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I'm in the planning stage of my first hydroponic grow. The room I will be using is a 28"x 28"x 84" closet within my spare room. I'm using the bubbleponics system from stealth hydro, along with a 250w HPS w/ cool tube and a digital ballast. For exhaust I'm using the Vortex vtx400 4" fan with a carbon filter.
The problem I'm running into is how to exhaust hot air and intake cool air discreetly. I rent, and therefore am unable to drill into the attic or door for either. I was hoping there is someway to exhaust underneath the door crack without any visible ducting or impeding air flow severely.
Please share any insight, it is much appreciated.

That's a tough one man.  There really isn't a whole lot you can do unless you cut a hole in the ceiling.  You can always just repair it later.

Man, I would say look into getting a cheap used door (try the "materials" section of Craigslist.com), and put your intake and exhaust in that. That way you can just put the original door in its place when you're done. That's what I would do... or maybe put the exhaust in the ceiling and repair the hole when you're done. As long as there isn't a texture on the ceiling, you should be able to replace the hole and make it invisible...

I thought buying a spare door would be my best option. The only problem is having obvious holes in the door. I'm trying to make sure there is nothing exposed to arouse suspicion. The ceiling is textured, so drilling a hole in that would be a nightmare later.

Would I get good results with exhausting through the door (drilled hole at bottom), and enriching the room with CO2 rather than intake?

I would probably use dry ice or those dissolving pucks.

Sounds like maybe you're not in the best situation to be growing really.  Maybe you should wait until you're in a spot that it wont be a hard to grow the right way.

If this is a house just cut a hole in the ceiling, and then repair it when you move.  I rent and have done this a number of times.  Even if it's textured you can make it look fine.  Plus since it's in the closet I really doubt they are going to notice man.

I guess the ceiling it is. I'm just concerned the carbon filter won't completely eliminate the odor. I live in a duplex, so the neighbor could catch on. I think the attic is not separated and although I don't think they'd snitch, you never really know. As for intake, would drilling holes in the bottom of the door for passive airflow be sufficient?

Take the door off.  To make sure that you wont have smell coming through the filter, make sure you have a big enough fan.  So at least a six inch inline with carbon filter, otherwise you're risking smell.  You could also buy an inline ozone generator.

I don't mean to question your experience, but I was told that a 4" fan would be more than sufficient for an area of my size.

Could you recommend any ozone generators? I was unaware that you could install them in the ducting for a reasonable price.

A 4" fan is very ambiguous.  There are 4" fans that come in all sorts of CFMs.  I found that a 4" wasn't enough to keep smell down in my experience.  Luckily I was in a circumstance where it didn't put me at risk.  But when your living in a duplex you are running quite a bit of risk.

If you are going to grow in a high risk situation it is best to take all precautions possible.  Ozone generators aren't cheap by any means, but what's money compared to a felony manufacturing with intent to distribute charge?  It looks like you can get one for a 4" setup for about 200 bucks.  Don't forget a muffle for noise as well.

The fan I looked at is about 175CFM. When you say muffle do you mean the box that goes around the fan, or is it completely different? My previous project was psilocybe cubensis, but the potential charges and profit were far different from hydroponics. As for felony charges, under 5 plants is a misdemeanor in my state so I plan to stay within those confines. Unfortunately, this means I can not clone as they count those.

I will definitely be looking into the O3 gen. I'll have to do more research on those, as I only have a basic knowledge of them.

Thank you again for all the help.

A concern I just realized is the effect of the ozone on my plants and self. I will be exhausting to the room directly outside the closet rather than the exterior of the house. Will the plants or my lungs be "burned" by the ozone, or is it a safe level emitted by the generator?

Well if you're just venting into your living area you don't want to use an ozone generator.  The reason I mentioned that was under the scenario of venting into your attic.  And when using it you put it into the exit ducting so the ozone never touches your plant.  If your just venting into your room I would worry about it.  Keep the plants small and it wont be a problem with too much smell if you have that carbon filter.

That's crazy that cultivation under 5 plants is a misdemeanor in your state.  Any cultivation is a felony where I live, as long as you don't have a medical card obviously.  I though we were pretty decent about laws here too.

Yea it's only as a first offense. Punishable by up to 1 year and max. $500. Pretty lenient if you ask me, but medicinalization would be more favorable. A guy can dream.
