Ph meter question
    #612740 - 03/14/12 10:44 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

So My ph meter broke after 6 months...  Cheap yellow ebay one for like 12.00. I started looking for a new one at the local shops around my house.  All the meters I have seen say

"Electrodes must be rinsed after use and stored in electrode storage solution to insure proper function of the meter. "

I never heard or knew this.  My questions for you guys are:

Do you guys actually Store your meters in electrode solution?

What is electrode solution?

What type of PH meter are you all using and how long do they last and how often do you use them?

I was looking and they range between 30.00 and 200.00 at the shops around town.  I could also order another one from ebay for 12.00.  IMO 2.00 a month for a digital ph meter doesnt seem so bad.  What do you guys think?

I don't use a meter.
Found no reason to use anything other than the drops myself.
I don't test as much as I use to, mainly because I know my mix well at this point.

See all I do is some form of hydro.
Coco Coir, flood and drains, drips, dwc
Still I haven't had a need for a meter.

Yes you are supposed to keep them in a solution.  Not that hard to do in all honesty.  I got a hannah meter and it's awesome.  3 years running, and when I go to calibrate it, it's never off.  I think the price was like 1110-130.  Totally worth it.

And to Stone, my nutrient solution is so dark that the drops wouldn't work for me at all.

Really??  What nute line do you use again?
I've used botanycare, and floranova which is pretty dark, but the drops still worked for me fine.
Now I'm using Flora Duo, which is almost clear until I add Floralicious Plus, that stuff turns it to muddy water, and still no issues for me the blind man.

I use Botanicaire line up.  I've just seen that with adding PHC Biopack and Liquid Karma it's easier to just use a pen than to try and see through with the drop system.

Were talking about a pH test kit that uses drops added to your water to determine the pH.

Havk I get what you're saying, and I know many who wouldn't even try to grow without a ph pen.

Oh I did it for years with the drops.  Just got tired of fussing with em.  Just seems easier for me to use the pen.

I've always used drops, but when I decided to grow indoors for the first time this winter I picked up a tri meter when I bought all my gear. The thing is amazing. I strongly reccomend it man. I paid around 200 for it. It comes with a great warranty. Super easy to use. Especially when you're putting a lot of additives in when you feed.

The ph meter does need to be stored in a calibration solution when not in use. My ph meter came with a lil rubber nipple that you pull off when using it. Always make sure their is enough calibrated solution in the "nipple" before you cap it onto the tip of the meter. The pen is never to dry out.

Good luck on your search!

The video below will show you how to calibrate your meter.  The meter has worked fine for me.

I think I will just get another one of the ebay ones and some of the electrode solution.  I think it broke because I didn't use the solution and kept it dry all the time.  The drops are crap and not accurate at all IMO.

you can get the buffer solution at hydro stores, online, American science and surplus, beer brewing stores possibly even pool stores.  Apparently you should also get the Electrode Storage Solution which you can also find the same places.  Dont you have the buffer packets in the case for you ph meter?  or did you use them already?

I ended up picking up a milwaukee PH55 Ph/temp meter for 50.00 and a bottle of the storage solution.  I have heard very good reviews about them.  It's waterproof and also has a changeable probe so I shouldn't have to buy a new one.
