Laptops are good if you're studying because you can take them to uni and take notes etc. I got a Macbook for this reason but I use it as a desktop replacement. It's connected to a 24 inch monitor, a better keyboard and a mouse. However, if I go to uni then I unplug a couple of cables and put it in my bag.
If you don't think you'll travel with it much and you like playing games etc then get an iMac. It'll be a lot cheaper and you'll get better specs. I'll probably need to upgrade my computer when Diablo 3 comes out so I'll probably get an iMac.
