CFL grow (UPDATED)
#60052 - 06/18/08 01:51 PM (16 years, 6 months ago) |
|
|
This is my first grow, it's not really a serious attempt, more of a test... I'm not aiming for a large yield or anything, I'm just trying to make the most of what I have. Got the seed from some mids I had a couple months ago.
I'm using a 150 watt CFL bulb, I'm trying to make a nice and compact plant, keeping it as small as I can. I already switched it to 12/12 about a week ago.
I know it's nothing much, but I've always wanted to try growing my own plant...
BTW, I'm kinda using a stealth grow method, as in I clipped off the extra fan leaves to make it less recognizable.

Good luck man but your gonna hurt the growth cutting new leaves like that. Hope you get some good mids out of it at least

Yeah, all that is accomplishing is seriously decreasing the growth and potential potency of the plant. It needs its leaves to photosynthesize. Doing it for stealth purposes doesn't make any sense - its still recognizable as marijuana. If stealth is a concern, the room shouldn't be found by anyone anyways.

Hmm, you guys have a good point... I thought about that, but the only thing that made me think it wouldn't do any harm was this;
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2005824#2005824
This dude did it to all his plants, I'm not sure how his yield was (probably not much)... but I'm not really concerned about yield; I'm just excited to be growing my own bud. Anyway, I'll leave the leaves there next time I grow (once this plant is done.

Yeah dude, definitely leave them be. The leaves are the only place that the plant produces energy for itself, and the more surface area its leaves have to absorb light, the more optimally the plant will grow and produce.

Update!
It's been in 12-12 for a couple weeks, and it's starting to bud... I took your advise and stopped clipping the fan leaves.
What do you guys think?

The tops are looking beautiful.
The light should be plenty for the plant (do you know what color temperature it is?), so I think the stretching (long distance between nodes) that had occurred was due to the plant not having enough leaf material to make use of the light, making it stretch to find it. The reason I ask about the color temperature is that the best color temperature of a CFL for flowering isn't the same as for the vegetative state. For vegging its around 6500k (daylight) and for flowering its around 2700k (cool white).

Well, I'm not sure of the color temperature, but it's a very bright orangish color...

Sounds like its around 2700k, for flowering, so you should be set.

Wow looking nice
It's amazing how much negative stuff gets thrown around about CFL's and there are results like this with such little investment!

So do you guys think they're big enough to go ahead and switch from 12/12 to 10/14 so they finish up maturing? I want them to reach their full potential, but I'm not really sure how to know if they're ready or not..........plus I'm getting a little anxious....

I should keep it on 12/12? I guess man, I had just heard that shortening the light cycle will force it to finish up maturing, and I didn't really think it would hurt......................
What negative effects will occur from me switching it to 10/14?
I'm baked off some cali kush and blasting music for my plant!!

It might help it "finish up maturing, but I'd have to imagine all this means is less yield and less potency. Anything less than 12/12 and you're really only taking away light the plant still needs for photosynthesis.

I thought this was a CFL Grow??? Did you end up buying a Mercury Vapor HID? Those have a terrible light spectrum for Cannabis. Metal Halide is even a much better choice to flower with than MV but HPS is the best. Fill me in please if you've changed your light source.

Wait, I said that under the assumption that CFL's were like regular fluorescents in the fact that they "use electricity to excite mercury vapor."

Okay, I have a couple questions.....
1. There are a couple red hairs on my plant, the rest of them a white........ I read that it's ready to be harvested when half the hairs turn red..... the only thing is, it looks like the hairs that already turned red are just dying, and that the hairs that are white are just staying white. I have no clue what I should do.
2. Supposedly you're supposed to dry in a dark cool place, because THC breaks down under light..... does this mean sunlight? Would the light from CFL's hurt it?

Deciding when to harvest by the color of the pistils isn't a good method to do it by. The best, most common way is to look at the trichomes. Usually you would harvest when most of them have turned cloudy and some amber, although it is really a matter of preference as how much you allow to become cloudy or amber will determine to some extent how the high will be.
I'm sure THC degrades while the buds are still forming as well, but the difference is the plant is still growing and probably quickly replaces any that is lost so that it doesn't make a difference. Once the plant is harvested, of course, it isn't capable of producing more, and you're just losing it from light degradation.

Ahh, thank you..... I see.....
I don't have a very good means of looking closely at the plant, but from this little magnifying glass, I can see that all of the trichomes look cloudy, none are amber........ is the difference between clear and cloudy easily spotted?

Hmm.... the buds are starting to develop more trichomes, but what's bothering me is that one of the buds, the shortest (farthest from the light), looks like it has more trichomes on the small surrounding leaves than any of the other buds...... why?
This bud seems to be way more sparkly.....

You have inspired me to start my grow cabinet. CFL cheapness for the win. And you are correct in assuming that CFL's have mercury vapor in them. So don't break them cause not only will you then have mercury vapor in your room to get it professionally cleaned and shit costs like 2 grand. >.<
