Transplant Question
    #596693 - 11/12/11 11:22 AM (13 years, 34 minutes ago)

Hey guys,

I was wondering when you think it's a good time to transplant seedlings to their gallon sized pots for indoor growing? TIA

Depends on what they are in right now. I remember reading that the perfect time is when the canopy has a bigger diameter then the pot, but anytime after the 3rd set of true leafs and before they become rootbound should be good.

its better to have some roots before you transplant. aslong as those roots arn't starved for nutes you are ok. if the seedling just broke the serfice its ok to trans 2weeks after that.

Honestly I wouldn't go strait to 1 gallon with seedlings..

In my experience, we inadvertently train the root system just like we would train the canopy.  I believe the plants benefit from growing nice thick rootballs in stages, maximizing the efficiency of your pot size.

For a one month veg, I would go from seed to a 4"-6" pot, and then week 2-3 put them in the 1 gal pot with a week or better to go before flipping.

Also in my experience transplanting isn't as stressful to the plants as many people say... "shock" may last only a day... Fresh soil is always appreciated, often smoothing out any nute issues, and can help delay the need to flush.

Pretty sure thats 6 inch diameter not deep.

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

Always thought when someone said x" pot it meant a cube shaped pot w/ x=side length. I guess I should have asked before, but is there an established "normal" height? It is never mentioned, just like in DudeTron's post.
Am I missing something here?

As far as I know you're correct about x" pot = side length or diameter...

Though there's not really a great standard of measurement and even by volume a '1 gallon pot' usually wont be an actual gallon and it will often be different from the next '1 gal. pot'

And you're also right in that a solo cup is damn near a 4" container,
but even a solo cup still counts as a 'middle' pot size in between cutting (rockwool/peat pellet/aero) and a 1 gallon pot

I have half gallons that I thought were 6 inches...they must be 8 or 12 then. Maybe I just suck with envisioning measurements in my head haha.

I see 6 inches as your middle fingers put together at the tips, and then knuckle to knuckle is 6 inches. IDK.
