I know some sativas can go for what seems to be for ever. but with 8 week buds is there any real harm in letting them go 12+ weeks? i love my buds with as much amber trichome as possible i never chop a lil early because i want a "more energetic" medication. as long as there is no mold i dont see a problem. when will the THC start to degrade/transform.

Once the THC is produced the plant isn't going to "take it back" Its just going to keep growing and producing until it reaches the end of its life. This is predetermined by genetics as this is when winter would be coming and the plant would naturally die off (as its an annual plant). At this point keeping the plant around would be just like drying the whole plant in a pot... Also as the plant starts to die off it will become less and less mould resistant as now the plant cant fight back as well.
I hope that helped... Or at very least I'm correct.
-------------------- In order to grow good weed you need to be part carpenter, electrician, plumber, biologist, geneticist, chemist, and very willing to get dirty.
I've been working with power tools since I was 8, my dad is an electrical engineer who owned a 280 gal fish tank, and I studied biology with a specialty in genetics. Getting dirty comes naturally. I think my parents inadvertently trained me to be a weed grower.

Just so you know the more amber or the longer you leave them the less energetic they become. You don't want them when they are clear but when they are a milky white just before they go amber.

maybe i typed that the wrong way i dont like the energetic high unless from a sativa i prefer a couch-lock.
can you clarify as to why i would not want them all amber? edit- and to what would happen 4 weeks after they are allamber.

Once the trichomes begin to darken THC levels are beginning to break down. Now some people prefer a more couch-lock stone with a ‘messed up mind’ feeling over a head high so to them the THC that has broken down and that causes an increase in levels of CBN equates to higher potency but the actual level of THC did not increase. It only changed causing a different effect that some prefer and mistake for higher levels of THC due to not understanding the chemistry of pot plants and THC.
The first link claims that as THC breaks down it turns into CBD. That is not correct. CBD (Cannabidiol) is a natural normal chemical produced in marijuana plants in different levels in different strains and it increases some of the effects of THC and decreases other effects of THC. High levels of THC and low levels of CBD contribute to a strong, clear headed, more energetic high.
Cannabis that has a high level of both THC and CBD will produce a strong head-stone that feels almost dreamlike. Cannabis that has low levels of THC and high levels of CBD produces more of a stoned feeling. The mind feels dull and the body feels tired.
Because it causes a stoned-feeling often times higher levels or CBN are confused with being higher levels of CBD because CBN causes a ‘messed up mind’ effect that is confused by many as being more stoned.
The second link says; "When the resin glands or trichomes (on your buds) are about one-half turning a milky white or amber in color (versus clear or translucent), and the small hairs have begun to turn orange, brown or reddish in color, it is then time to harvest your weed."
Well that is fine and dandy ONLY IF your personal preference is the same as that of the author of the information found on the page. If someone is like me and they greatly prefer more of a head high the very last thing they want is for any trichomes to turn amber because amber trichomes equate to an increased stone over more of a clear head high. For those who prefer more of a couch-lock stone they would be more satisfied with most or all of the trichomes being amber and would not want many or any to be milky white.
That is why I have REPEATEDLY said that there is no singular correct time/trichome color to harvest that will give everyone what they most want from their crop. You have to harvest based on your personal preference in high or stone or combination of the two and go by the trichome color and the trichome color alone and not pay any attention to pistil color, as the information found following the second link recommends, or bud color or scent or breeder flowering times given or how someone on the Yucatan Peninsula or in Moldova or in Indiana tells you they harvested.
If you allow your trichomes to turn brown the THC level has dropped dramatically and you end up with what I would consider too be compost.
Nothing matters other than what YOU like and want, period, the end, thus endeth the lesson.

This is based purely on scientific reasoning.

Once all(if not the large majority?) of the trichomes are formed (which occurs several weeks before harvesting) they mature which includes becoming larger, forming a rounder resin head, changing color from clear to cloudy white to to orange to amber red. Once they have reached peak potency the trichomes begin to degrade where they droop over as if they were melting the weed at this point becomes less potent and more lethargic if anything.
Also, before your plant reaches a point where it starts to wither and die it will show male flowers which will shed pollen. This is how Soma makes his "organic all natural feminized seeds"
