Soil grow nutes, organic nutes and fish emulsion
    #589996 - 10/03/11 03:35 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Hi everyone,

My seeds are just starting to sprout  I'm so excited.
Anyways, while shopping at the grocery store, I decided to go past their tiny attempt at a gardening section.
I ended up buying a bottle of fish emulsion nutes, and I had a couple questions.

1. I don't start feeding until it has its first set of true leaves and start with half or quarter strength nutes, is that right?

2. What's the deal with organic nutes vs un-organic nutes?
What difference is there in the final product, and what do you guys use.

3. And finally, looking at the fish emulsion packaging, I have no idea how much to feed. Is weed classified as a flower?

Cheers & thanks for the help  :rastamon:

I can't decide if I want to go organic or not, so hopefully your input can help me decide.
Being my first grow and having spent alot more that i can really afford, I really dont wanna mess up...

Fish emulsion is great for veg period.

I'd also like to mention it's primarily used in outdoor applictions.

Open the bottle and you'll smell the reason why.

Bump, still not sure which dosage to follow. Is MJ classed as a flower on this dosage chart? Any help would be much appreciated

yes the flowering chart would be the closest thing to what you need. try it at half the recommended dosage to start and work your way up from there until you know what your girls like.

and as far as organic vs chem there is a huge difference in the finish. personally i have found that growing organically if i do not flush at all it will be just as smooth as herb grown non organically which recieved a 2 week flush. That being said when you flush organic weed the end product is far nicer.

the other bonus is i find in the long run its cheaper to go organic because your nutrients last much longer and they tend to release slower into the soil so you get a much more stable feeding regiment as apposed to a nutrient injection once every week or two.

and as far as what i use? ive got kelp concentrate, 2 bat guanos (1 N rich and one P rich), snow crab meal, vitamin B1 with yucca, myco madness microbial supplement and i just started using GH rare earth.

its alot to deal with but every thing i have is for a different stage of development and has a substantial shelf life. i am still on all the original bottles/bags of everything i bought back around may.

thats my 2 cents anyway.

Thanks.
When should I start feeding them? Wait for the 1st set of true leaves?

that totally depends on whats in your soil. i found most strains dont really need a feeding until they start branching. but there are always exceptions. i add amendments to my soil so i usually dont start feeding until they are a few weeks old. and even then i feed really light.

a good rule of thumb is "if they dont need it, dont feed it"

P is correct. i start to feed 2weeks after the seed leaves get lite. then 25%strength nutes. i would have to say that as far YOUR effective dosage it is a little above the "indoor plant" amount of 2ml/3L. later the plants are big nough to actually use 100% nutes. seedlings use stored energy to grow before they reach light/photosythn. bud uses nutes in a ratio of 4:3:6...yours is 9:2:6. use mycorizza to get faster plants...

Thanks for the info guys.

The potting mix I chose was one that had no fertilizers mixed in, so I think I can probably start with the fish emulsion once it develops its true leaves and starts branching.
Will start at quarter strength and work my way up, and hopefully by the time my grow room is ready and i can bring the girls indoors, I plan to have some proper nutes from the hydro shop.

Been looking at Dutch master, due to its affordability and popularity. Any others along the same affordable line that i should look at?

i have actually been chatting with the guys over at sannie about retailing some of their products at my club. they have these awesome buffer tabs. they are slow release pills that you put in the soil that give your plants all the NPK they need up until the 3rd week of flower and also provide the micronutes and ph balance for their whole life cycle. they are pretty cheap too and 100% organic. EU standards.

Prenicious: That sounds like a perfect product for a beginer like myself.
Any chance you could point me to some more info, and whether they are sourcable in Australia.
A PM will do if you don't wanna post the details here.
Do you have any experience with it?

Also, I read a little about AN nutes. Supposed to be the exact same as General Hydroponics nutes + liquid karma, at only a fraction of the price.
I've wanted to look into that also, but I have no idea what AN stands for, lol

lol i just posted links directly to their page in my comment. click the bold txt. i dont know how much more info you need.

but no i haven't had experience with them yet but sannie is a very reputable seller for both seed stock and products so id imagine if they say it works, it does. hence why im trying to negotiate a good wholesale price from them.

i have no idea what the laws are like down under so thats something you would have to figure out on your own.

AN = Advanced Nutrients.

GH = General Hydroponics

Their old Grow, Micro, Bloom was a GH 3 part clone with added whatever. (Liquid Karma is a Botanicare nutrient btw) The AN version was marginally cheaper. Now their Grow Micro Bloom is watered down to make it "pH perfect" and would definitely cost more then GH 3part.

However... Advanced Nutrients now has "Jungle Juice" grow micro bloom which is again a clone of the GH 3 part system at around 60% of the cost.

I honestly think AN is a bit less consistent perhaps not with this particular nutrient but overall. I've seen some tests done analyzing their nutrients and they had lower heavy metals than the competition (GH Flora nutrients in this case) but I've also seen tests done where AN nutrients didn't match their guaranteed analysis on almost every element. So in my eyes AN is more of a gamble than GH.

GH also doesn't market as many useless products as AN IMHO. There was someone on ICMAG who did a side by side of Kushie kush and there was no observable difference. It was a kush variety being grown too!

Just tried to place an order on the Sannies webshop for some buffertabs and Symbiosis mycorrhiza fungi.
Anyways, to cut a long story short, they will not ship to Australia.
I don't understand why, when the country list on the shipping details page has nearly every single other country in the world  :shakefist:

Anybody know a local place that stocks em, or of a similar available product? If not, I'll just have to learn to use nutes the normal way.
Not looking forward to that bit since thats the part of the grow I was really stressing about since IMO, messups in those areas will be most unforgiving. Will just have to be careful...
