I think my laptop has crashed, techheads get in here

Everything has been deleted from my desktop and my documents, I can still access Steam and play all my games, plus my all my passwords are still saved in firefox as well as the hompages. But I keep getting these messages saying 'Critical error' and that parts of my HDD clusters are partially damaged
- It can't locate/save to system32
- There's a performance problem with installed IDE/SATA hard drives
- And that my RAM is super low and that, that's causing problems too
I have TrendMicro Maximum Security as a virusscanner and its not picking up on anything, somebody help me!

I suggest getting Spybot S & D and running it.
This is weird. Its acting like your drive is broken, but if you're able to boot it up, its obviously not.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

Yea I actually think I have a virus and its just hiding all my shit/taking it. I created a new my computer shortcut on my desktop and it says shortcut(2) and it did the same with a new folder I made, so clearly they are still there but they are hidden somewhere.
Got a link for S&D I could try?

If it's not some malware than your drive is on it's last legs I'm afraid.

So I downloaded the first link no problems, it was half way through scanning before it froze, crashed and since my computer has no RAM and the C: drive is apparently fucked; deleted
Its 2am and I really cbf downloading it again, I'm just gonna go to bed and weep. Thanks for the help so far and feel free to keep it coming. Hopefully Harry will stroll in with his cane, give it a tap and everything will be ok.

That's malware for sure. You didn't get the redlight when a random program pops up telling you your computer is fucked. BUY NOW TO FIX IT

not to do a restore start> accessories> system tool> system restore
I'd set the date back a month or so and these things sometimes lay waiting on your computer so the very first thing I'd do after the restore would be to get an anti virus/maleware

When I go to save stuff to the desktop I can see my computer/documents, and when I tried to save a screenshot under the default name 'Capture' it tells me that name has already been taken because I saved another screenshot earlier under the same name, so clealy everything is still there I just can't see it

Assuming you have windows try starting it in safe mode and see if everything is visible. I'm also assuming that your anti-virus program is up to date? Cause if its not then your virus scan won't pick up on what it should. If that's all good then try installing a different anti virus program on a clean portable hard drive and running a scan from there. Your anti-virus might be corrupted

1. Boot into safemode with networking. 2. Download Malewarebytes. 3. Run scan, remove malware, then reboot.
That should fix it, but if not....
1. Boot into safemode with networking. 2. Download Combofix. 3. Run Scan then reboot.
If that doesn't fix it, I'd recommend backing up your files to an external while booted from a livecd, then performing a fresh install. But the first group of instructions should do it.

I cannot stress how right this is. If you can't install Spybot, or if Spybot doesn't fix it, try MalwareBytes.
(Safe mode is pressing F8 after turning on the power for the machine.)

So what exactly happened?
Were you not able to get into safemode?
IME combofix will fix even the worst malware problems.
I've found that it works best in 32 bit XP and Vista environments.
But you have to be careful. It can blow your system away.
It will give you the option of downloading recovery console, definitely do that and make sure to make a restore point. You do this through combofix itself.
If your system does get blown away, you can reboot, press F8 at boot up, and choose "Last known good configuration." This will restore your PC to the state it was at previously.
Before doing any of this it's a good idea to download an iso image of BartPE or any live linux distro and backup your files to an external hardrive. That way you can ensure that you don't lose the data you want to keep.
So what happens when you follow those steps? Do you get to run malwarebytes, but the problem persists after boot up? Or can you not get into safemode?
If you can't get into safemode I'd recommend a clean install. If you can, you may need to run the scanners a couple times before your system is totally clean.
Feel free to if you need step by step help, I'll be lurking around....

Thanks for your help everyone, I used Malwarbyte and found it was a Trojan-FakeAleart so basically it was made to look like system recovery.
But yea big thanks to Koopa for walking me all through it, hopefully I should be able to recover all my lost data. But strangely enough the thing pissing me off the most is the fact I still can't change my background, its just plain black
