hello, though i am a long time member at the shroomery under a different name, i am a semi-noob at growing "tomato's"
i am building a stealth box using this as a cab
http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_021W682528110001P.
My boss was doing fall cleaning, and gave me 2 of these bulbs still in the box
lumalux ET18 400w HPS
http://www.atlantalightbulbs.com/ecart/nw012104/SYLVANIALUMALUXS51LU400.htm
if i use a cool tube, or cooled system, will these bulbs work?
I am trying to make this cab as cheaply as possible, so if i dont have to buy new lighting its a plus
again, im sorry about the noob question

The bulbs he gave you will work just fine - but obviously there are better options out there, such as the one linked.
Are you using a digital or magnetic ballast? Some bulbs (including hortilux) have issues igniting and make weird noises when ran on certain digital ballasts. For my digital ballast I like Ushio HiLux bulbs. For magnetic 400w ballast, I'd probably pick up some CMH bulbs, but that's personal preference.
Not sure if you're planning on running 800w in that area - that might be a bit overkill and... difficult to control the temps.

I absolutely loved these when I was running a magnetic ballast -
http://advancedtechlighting.com/cdmed18.htm
They're about $50-$55 each and they give you a free cheap HPS lamp as well. It's a full spectrum lamp, if you scroll all the way down to the bottom there's light spectrum charts you can take a look at.
If you're strapped for cash, the bulbs you have will work just fine. If you've got money to blow, and feel like investing in a better bulb, then you can't go wrong with Ushio or Hortilux. Or even those CMH bulbs if you feel like giving those a shot.

if i am buying a new bulb set up ( which i feel im gonna ) do you think i could squeeze a 600w in that cab, with air cooling? though i may change cab, if i get approved for a sears card.. if i do, i am changing to this cab so i can have a mother and clone area

Might be a tight squeeze on that 600. With a cool tube and a 6" inline and some cool ambient temps, you might be able to pull it off.
I wanted to run 600's in my cabs which are both 2.5' x 3.5' x 5' - I made some DIY cool tubes from a bake-a-round. I have a 6" inline fan with a Y-split on it dedicated to the cool tubes, and a 4" vortex with a phresh filter venting/filtering both cabs - the filter is in a sealed box with 2 lengths of ducting running to each cab from that box.
I'm only running 400's currently and my temps are 82-85f. That's with 68f ambient temps. Gonna try a 6" filter and try switching fans - running the 400 dedicated to the cool tubes and the 6" venting the cabs. Hopefully that'll allow me to run 600's.
