Has anyone had any experience with this? my PS3 crashed last night and I'm getting the YLoD
I'm concerned because it sounds like Sony charges $50 just for a diagnostics

I haven't yet...I've got a slim. I'm hoping it never happens to me.
Best of luck with that...lemme know how it goes.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

OK... I just finished putting my PS3 back together, I have 2 "extra" screws and the power button doesn't work but it cost $10 and I was able to keep my saved data

YLoD is similar to X-boxes red ring of death?
I hope mine doesn't go out. I tend to leave my ps3 on all the time, and never shut it off.

we should play some MK soon.
I'll probably get on in about an hour and play a lil bit. I'll be zombied out on ambien and weed too, so i'll probably lose, but oh well &

same here but I've been particularly rough on it the last month
there is a thermal paste that drys out after a couple of years and your chances skyrocket
but it was an easy repair now I'm going to go out of my way to keep it cool and I'll be going easy on it until I'm sure the fix will hold
to bad though I was really looking forward to the MK Kollection which I believe comes out this week

What did you do?
How were you rough on it? Just by playing a lot of games? I mostly use mine for netflix, and that's basically it. I rarely play games on it.
Well at least it was a cheap/easy repair. I hope I don't have to do it any time soon.
I wish I could turn it off, but I like passing out to tv shows such as ancient aliens

Mine was an original backwards compatible 80 gig refurbish from gamestop (so there was a good chance sony wouldn't fix it)
I wasn't going to lose anything by trying and I even got to keep my saved data (something that sony wipes out)
now I'm going to try and back up everything because if it dies again in under a month I'll just buy a new one

*I've been doing work on my house so there has been a lot of dust in the air,
*I've been bringing it places and often running it while it was on a rug (probably blocking the vents)
*and I turned off the auto shutoff to get one of the MK trophies
so if you pass out watching movies like me you're best off turning the auto off feature to like 2 hours, and if it does shut off on it's own let it cool down before you turn it back on

I got the RLOD on my PS3 a week or so ago
what method did you use to fix yours ?
Im about to take a swing at mine, right after I see if my extended warranty is up
I feel like they design these to fail right after the warranty window

Oh cool, I didn't know there is an auto-shut off. I'm gonna have to look into that.
Dust is no gusto for electronics. I need to remind myself to dust more often, because I get a lot of it. I might need to get some canned air-duster.

the hardest part is disconnecting the ribbon cables but once you know how to release them you're golden
I'd also recommending marking the screws and holes with different colored sharpies or nail polish between steps to keep reassembly problems to a minimum

You got a slim or an old phat one? Out of curiosity.
I got lucky and the game store fucked up and gave me a slim.

At the time I went through hell to get one that was but now it's not necessary because you can get the backwards compatibility free from the store

I had the fat 40gb model, and i failed repairing it, the internals on the 40 are pretty different from the 60 and 80 and i couldnt get down to the motherboard, i tried to just hit the heatsink with the heatgun since it would still heat the cores but it didnt work. Then my heatgun caught on fire so i think im gonna call it quits for now, maybe try again once i find a good 40gb tutorial
