putting together a little project for my own tinkering fun. been so busy with giant trees and rooms filled with 1kw lights and i want to just have a fun little thing to mess with.
going to do this on as tight of a budget as possible in order to challenge myself a bit.
took 48 diablo og (reeferman's el diablo x og kush) cuttings from my mothers and put them in plugs. those should be rooted and ready when i have the box all built. -48 plugs - $12 -tray / dome - free -dip n grow - free -48 diablo og cuttings - free
grabbed a 4" 165 hydrofarm fan i had laying around - free
looking at a 400w hps setups online, probably will go with this: -400w hps ballast kit - $55 -400w hps bulb - $30 -wiring and timer - free
i don't really want to fart around with too much veg time, so im mulling over how much canopy i want to get going. with 48 cuts i could do a SoG and get a nice 3x4 box filled out without any effort. this may be the route i go for simplicity's sake. vertical sounds cool but i could easily drop a good chunk of money on plumbing shit to get that going.
so the cabinet design is decided - going with one based on tick's sog-n-box. 32"x48" footprint, 48" tall. also building a companion box to hold a CO2 tank/system and a 5000btu window ac. the companion box will have a 4" fan inside it to circulate air to the cabinet - so i'll have the whole thing sealed and supplemented nicely. the reason for not building the AC and CO2 equip into the main cabinet is that we will be building at least one more grow cabinet. with this design, we can daisy-chain the two grow cabs so that they will both be handled nicely by the same environmental equip. i'm not sure how things would work out but i'm guessing i could actually run as many as 3 of these grow cabinets off the single companion box.
-plywood and drywall screws for the cabinet + ac box - $65 -5000btu window ac unit - free -CO2 tank and equip - free
the most awesome part is i had the home depot guy cut all the plywood for this, so the cabinet just needs to be screwed together! still need to get hinges, a hasp, and weather stripping for the door. also need to grab paint.
not sure what kind of setup i'm going to do inside at this point. i'm strongly leaning towards just a normal SoG rather than some kind of stadium setup, although i'm going to stick some spare plants and things in and see how it all looks. i've ruled out any kind of aero shit, plumbing parts are FUCKING EXPENSIVE. whatever goes in the cab is going in pots of coco coir for sure.
400 watt Dixie Cups Soil This is how you do it on a budget.

how often did you have to water those? seems like my stuff in cups starts drying out real quick when its getting big. what footprint did you have that 400 covering? did you put the cups edge to edge or spaced out? and what was the yield off that? i'm down with cramming cups in, clone stock is effectively infinite. just don't want to create more headaches, got enough of those with the rest of the main operation
it also occurs to me that with a/c and co2, maybe i want to run more than 400w in this thing? either a 600w, or maybe just dual 400w? anyone have thoughts on that? with roughly 10 ft^2 of canopy, cannastats predicts 433 grams under a 600w, 400 grams under a 400w, 441 grams under dual 400w. this doesn't take into account any changes due to co2, and it is my understanding that co2 would allow me to take advantage of what would normally be "too much" light? is it smart to approach 10,000 lumens / ft^2 with co2 in the mix, given the fact that my a/c has enough capacity for it?
