I was by there around the time i was 7 or so and did some hiking.
It's definitely beautiful country out there, just make sure it's not going to storm to bad while you are out there and have a damn good tent. Don't just use one of those ones from walmart because they wont do shit for you in a real storm and you will be in butt fuck Egypt.

yeah proper lightweight equipment is expensive as fuck
I go more with the minimalistic / cheap approach, I have a decent light tent from REI, carry a very light blanket to sleep, mother nature is my sleeping pad
Have a little pocket rocket stove which is great but sometimes just for the hell of it Ill use the old soda can and isopropyl approach, makes u look like a badass too :P
cheap but big pack, got it used for $80, not sure what brand
oh and I have a proper water filter, I dont fuck around with the nasties lurking around in the water, seen too many people vomiting and pissing out their ass unable to walk to the nearest road for days
Little bit of rope, flip flops, food, water, first aid kit
and then whatever else I feel like throwing in my pack from around the house, a book, playing cards, drugs, stuff for passing time
