couple quick questions on an indoor setup
#578414 - 08/14/11 10:29 PM (13 years, 3 months ago) |

so ive got everything almost dialed in
but i need help detailing the dialing
first, if there is some main flowering heads that are shooting up a little higher and faster than everything else, can i top this, or now that theyre in their closet(will be full on flowering in a week or so)is it too late to do any topping?
second, ive noticed this tray im placing my plants in holds water for a long time. i used a towell to soak up the runoff. and that worked but i cant imagine that as a credible method of doing things i was thinking buying a mini water pump, or something similar, and just piping into the tray, and pumping the excess water into a container that i can then dump or use in my garden but if anyone has some tips or ideas on this, please let me know.
another thing. ive noticed with my ventilation setup, 2 6"can-fan (combined cfm unknown) ducted thru 5 lights in an X pattern (which drastically restricts flow) but at night time is completely comfortable at 75-80F i also have a 10" fan pulling air in(cfm unknown). it has a velcro filter on it, which is restricting some flow, but not a ton the fan is placed in a high corner, on the coolest side of the room, in which the grow room is when the fan is on, the closet heats up considerably. should i switch the flow? should it pull air out instead of pulling it in? even tho i already have the two 6" fans pulling out? the box is not "airtight" but its pretty damn close. ive been leaving the door open for the sake of heat buildup with my fans not being allocated properly
please help me get this dialed
this op should be beautiful!
OH one last thing. for organic soil/coco gardeners, does anyone have a favorite line up for flowering nutes
im noticing indoor flowers are WAY more sensitive than outdoor flowers, and im noticing burns where there shouldnt be, and reactions that shouldnt happen. im just nervous about blowing a whole crop on bad nutrient mixing...

as for the water thing i would use a wet dry vac.
as for nutes i would use the minimal nutes needed. (personally i do not use boosters or additives, just base nutes, silica, and kelp) keep the ppm lower. 850 is enough. water the mix down weekly. i was organic on my last grow and it was more trouble than it was worth. unless you are amending the soil. i used botanicare pure blend pro and it got really nasty in the reservoir, but if it is a smaller grow and you are hand mixing, i suppose it will work fine. just very expensive nutes which are not fully organic.

I didn't this person say he was using a hydro setup?? He said soil/coco mix.
I like either Botanicare line or GH Floranova.
Air flow should be venting the hot air out and cold air in. Seems obvious, but your description to me is a little unclear as to how your venting your air through the room. You can always just buy an airconditioner. That's what I did.

@ hawks apprentice i have a growroom inside a Room the Room stays cool all day im pulling "cold" air in to the growroom with a 10" fan thats filtered but it seems to only heat up the growroom i have two 6" fans extracting hot air thru the hoods of the lights in the grow room, that is exhausted outside of the house
when only the 6" fans are on the growroom is cooler than when the 10" fan is brining air in the growroom
so i dont know if im supposed to reverse the flow of the 10" fan or if i should run some ducting to a colder air location maybe my fan is just in a bad location maybe its a better system without the 10" fan, and more of a free flow system

Is the exhaust at the top of your grow space??

exhaust is 3/4 as high as the ceiling at one end (8'wall)
it is 2 6" fans run thru 5 lights
the "import" i guess youd call it, IS at the top of the grow space,at the opposite end as the exhaust (6" fans) it has a horizontal flow
*but it is still sucking in fresh air, from an area that the airtemp is ALWAYS cool. cool enough that it should bring the temp of the grow space down.
or so i thought

im running 5 600w with 2 6"vortec @ full speed
im not getting much over 85f and thats in the heat of it
its only getting cooler by the day here now.
i definitely dont think its getting TOO hot, i just dont like that my ventilation system is SCREWY it shouldnt warm up when i introduce new cold air
if it werent cooling off environmentally, i would worry about overheating, but i absolutely have to fix the flow of my grow space before attempting to use annually

Have you thought about running the lights at night. Cooler air.
My intake air is 85f at night. The air coming out is 100f.
Thank goodness the sun is going down earlier.

i do run middle of the night this room that the grow space is in, is so well insulated theres barely any fluctuation in temperature btwn hot day and cold night but id still rather run at night ambient intake air is around 70-75f(currently)min/max exhaust is run outside and probably comes out around 90f+ and id say the average temp in my grow space, including dark time, is 85f+/- peaking @ 88-89f and only dropping to about 73-75f on its coldest. with most time spent in the 83-86f range

why does light deprivation of outdoor plants
result in instant, and incredibly fast flower?
while indoor, switched to 12/12 days before, is still nowhere near the plants being light dep'd
same strains, same nutes
edit: a couple of reasons, could be high heat during day, low temps at night. and also high co2 outdoors!

in my indoor flowerin room my clones were kept relatively the same height and shape while in veg what i didnt take into consideration was that tops i had taken pre flower, formed into a short V branching of flowers, while any of the medium to large sized untopped branches shot up. leaving me with an uneven canopy i have my lights currently situated about 6" above the tallest flowers. the lower and outside brances are being neglected of light(possibly due to the lamps closeness to the tops of the plants)
im wondering if raising my lights, will weaken the energy, but cast a more even light on all of the plant/s
the plants look to be developing evenly tho, even without even lighting...
Also, maybe you guys/gals can help me decide if im optimizing my space and lighting
5 600W hps 12LX8W enclosed room lights hung in X formation. two at each end(8'sides), one in the middle. each hung symetrically the distance from one bulb center to another is 3'4"(W) and the distance(L)from one bulb center to the other is 8' so "center of bulb" perimeter of lights is roughly 3.5'WX8'L in a 8'Wx12'L room.
i have all the plants in a 4'X8' tray. (theyre getting way too crowded, but will have to finish in place...) which means i have around 1.5" of working space around the perimeter of plant tray and lights.
it seems like this set up is not maximizing my equipment.
any thoughts or comments

How long have you been flowering? I tie my tops down up to, 2 weeks into flowering. That's an option.
And amen about the weather. Last months electricity bill doubled. This has been a rough TX summer. I'm surprised my outdoor plant is still growing.

the A/C has only been turned on once this year, and that will be the only time. and the only reason it was turned on, was my roomy was being a bit spiteful hahah other than that, the only ambiance appliance we run is a wood burning stove!!! theyre getting pretty far along i put them in the closet 8/15 WOW...15days only. theyre suprisingly fat already...
another question, i noticed my plants pots/soil feeling VERY light after a few hours of lighting(they had been watered a couple days prior). so i was ready to water today when the lights came on. but the pots were heavy, as if the plants took all that humidity/transpiration out of the air that they had produced in the heat of lighting.
does this happen to indoor growers often???
ive been paying very close attention to temp and humidity flux and i think theyre both spot on 70-80F 25-45%rh

quick question for you guys
and i couldnt find the info here, so here i ask
my resevoir (just for mixing my soil drenches and teas) is 30 galons, and i filled it up about 4 days ago, because i usually like to let it sit a day, and brew its nutrient for another day or two.
my plants are reaching their full size and taking up water a little more slowly i believe, and i have now, a resevoir full of organic matter that has been ONLY circulating(no air, other than my occasional mixing) for 4days+ and its starting to stink its one of the more nutrient light drenches i will give them but im wondering, what i should do, pour it out and use new or add some hydrogen peroxide? etc does anyone add peroxide regularly to their soil drenches? ...i know what good organic smells like and i know what rotting smells like, my reservoir atm smells somewhere in between...

Probably should throw a few air stones in there. Not sure if that organic goo is still good but it doesn't sound good. This is the reason I ditched organics. If you are using a reservoir and your save your stuff for a day or 2 it gets gross easy. Probably best bet to ditch that stuff, but see if someone else disagrees.

ive been having some bad luck on my last 3 clone pulls.
originally i thought it was too much water, after using rockwoll for years and no problem, i stopped shaking them out after soaking them because they were drying out too much in our high desert climate.
now that its cooling off again, the water is remaining in the clone cubes, and theyre taking 3weeks or better to throw roots.
even once they have, their leafs are so weak, they cant survive w/o the humidity dome.
theyre becoming a real pain. ive never messed up clones like this. ppl come to me for clones. this is unacceptable.
i guess i have a few questions tho, and im not just bitching!
- how soon can i put freshly transplanted clones under my 400w metal halide
- how cold is too cold for cloning? when should i consider a using a heat mat?
- what is the preferred best pH for misting clones? *i like around 5.8-6 with some soluable bacteria/myco. but im thinking the bac/myco might be stripping the plants of vital protective agents...

would setting my clone boxes on top of my lit, hanging t5 serve as heat underneath? and then hang another floro above the clones on the t5 to light the clones
or is that too much heat under the clones?
im gonna go get supplies for an aero box. because this rockwool situation is

I think it may be too much heat, but the only way to find out is to put a temp monitor there and see what happens.
Rockwool is a PITA IMO. I spent 70 dollars on the Botinacare 8 site aero cloner and it was well worth it to me to have the pre made aero. So much easier.
