Getting into glass-blowing
    #571000 - 07/09/11 11:34 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I just bought a torch, and will be renovating my garden shed over the next month too make room for my studio.  It's going to be a blast.  Here's the torch I bought, and I'll be sure to post my WIPs.  I'll be making plenty of chillums, pipes, and hopefully I'll be able to make some bubblers to trade in the lot.  So keep an eye out.  Let me know if any of you are pre-interested.

Btw, this craft is extremely expensive.  This torch retails at $500 (I found it for $330), and I've still got another $700 in start up costs.

Right now I've only got glass thick enough to make chillums, and I'll have to do some pendant work first.  But I'll host a contest for my first 5 chillums on here.  I'm probably going to start clearing up my shed tomorrow.  I'll post pictures.

I've just spent the past hour cleaning out my shed and it's extremely hot, covered in wasp nests, and molding.

It really needs some work.  The worst part has to be the wasps, there is at least 10 nests in there and some of them have actual wasps in them.  Oh well, it will be worth it in the end.

I got it about half way cleared out today. There's a bunch of mold and weeds growing inside of it, but it will definately suffice as a workspace. I'd probably consider it more of a workshop than a studio.

Here's some pictures of it:

Pictures are pre-op =) More to come.  I'm lucky to have such a nice commidity, starving children in Africa...JK.

On a more serious note, the shed isn't mine.  So I'm going to have to share it with a lawnmower, the orange one in the picture.

That is awesome man! I got so ready to get a torch and all the materials but I don't have a space to do it in. My place is tiny and I don't have a shed or anything like that. Plus the ventilation would cost a fortune and it's more dangerous than I first thought. What are you going to use for ventilation?

Maybe I should find a headshop that would offer me another lesson (I did one in Colorado, so much fun).

I've got an old attic fan I'm going to place into the wall.  I may upgrade as time goes by, but I think it will suffice for now.  I've read that you need like a 4000cfm fan to properly vent an area.  I'm hoping mine will work for starting out.  You can always just rent an art studio downtown for a couple hundred a month.  They usually have a window, venting wouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm about to go back out and get to work.  I should have it all cleaned out by the end of today.  I'm going to be cutting my old grow box into a work bench =)  I'm also selling all of my grow gear to help fund my new hobby.  Check out the lot for my 'for sale' thread.  I've LED panels, timers, CFLs, etc.

Thanks, I'm thinking about trying ebay for the LED panels.

As for the shed, it's coming along great.  Except, I accidently killed a frog.  I cutting down the weeds that were growing into the shed from the outside edge of the floor with some garden shears.  A tiny frog jumped onto/into the blades and was cut in half.  It happened so fast, and all I saw was a blur.  But I had an idea of what occurred.  It was sickening, the top half of his body was still moving after he'd been cut.  I didn't realize it until five minutes after it happened too.  I had to put him out of his misery....

I stopped after about an hour and a half to go buy some extra wood and foam spray to seal the cracks in the shed.  I'm about to go out and finish it now =)  I should have it mostly done by tonight.  Pictures to come.

Nice startrek gif  :tronman:

I'm trying to sell mine.  I've got 4 15w panels, chinese made.  They will efficiently vegetate two plants to about 3 feet tall with a fraction of the cost, heat, and power.  They're in perfect condition, minus a scratch or two.

You probably have one of those huge 400w ones don't you?  I may make a housing for the four I have with fans and universal wiring to a timer.  I'll probably get a better sale that way.

But when a man says give away, how that's a dirreent story.
I currently have a 120 watt four band, and plan on ordering two 360's 7 band in the near future.

What a cute dog. Looks like you got some nice space there man. I can't wait to hear more from how it goes. If I hear enough good things from you it might be enough for me to get some gear for when I move into a place that will have space.

You should post some of it up anyway if you get a chance.
Just once a week or something post up a piece and we'll be able to see your progress over time. I think it'd be pretty cool.
