Some recent stuff
Also public service announcement: Anyone using the terms Double or Triple blown glass is bullshitting you. It a marketing term that is meaningless.
I had a piece I made thrown full force by a customer's angry ex-fiance at a hardwood floor survive because of quality materials and a proper kiln cycle.

PNC, I've got a quick question for you. Do you think this set would be sufficient for starting out lamp working?
http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Tech-Fireworks-Beginner%2527s-Beadmaking/dp/B000C11SD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309285330&sr=8-1
I figure I'll just be able to do beads with it, but I was wondering if blowing small pipes would be possible too. Thanks for the help.

Pipes use borosilicate coe 33 (hard glass, melts at 2300 degrees) that kit is for coe 96, 106 or something like that (soft glass, much lower temps). Any pipes you could make with that wouldn't survive your lighter hitting them but it's perfect for beadwork.
If you want to do hard glass this is the absolute most bottom rung torch you can use... link and you'll need several hundred dollars worth of equipment to make anything.
My current torch cost about 20x as much as that one.

I think that's the biggest thing setting most people back from getting started, the equipment costs.

So it'll cost about $500 for a start up kit with everything I need to get started?
I'm also wondering what the propane/oxygen torches need. Just a grocery store propane tank and an oxygen tank? I registered at talkglass.com btw, I'm really looking forward to learning as much as I can.

propane tank - from a grill oxygen - Big cylinders for welding or liquid (I use a 1000lb liquid tank)
Torch $100-$3000 (pipe torches are generally ~$500+ though you can on a national if you have patients) Eye-protection ~$80 Hoses and regulators $150-200 (cant be acetylene) flashback arrestors ~$50 refill on a propane tank (if you own one) - ~$20 oxygen ~$150/yr lease + ~$30/fill ...each tank (liquid is cheaper once you get to bulk use) Ventilation $varies upon your location but if you dont have it your poisoning yourself.
Tools - costs vary depending on what you're trying to do and how good you are at making your own but you will be spending a few hundred if your trying to make pipes (bowl push, tweezers, claw grabbers, graphite paddle are BARE minimum).
Glass - depends on what you want For example when I buy glass it's maybe an $800 order and shipping will be between $200-300 (you could live near a distributor and you don't need to order as much as I do though)
If your planning on selling anything you make you need a kiln ~$500 unless you can modify a used pottery kiln. (if you don't have a kiln literally everything you make will break)

So I'm really looking at a $1000 bare minimum.
What do you think about this kit?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Glassblowing-Beadmaking-Kit-/320719543130?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aac5fdb5a
What else would I need that's not included with it?
Thanks again for all of the help.
