I wanted to start with providing some information to those who lack it. Bongs have come a long way over the years. We've not got them with multiple percolators, diffusers, ash catchers, etc to help increase the enjoyment of hitting the bong. The rationale behind the use of a bong is the claim that the cooling effect of the water helps to reduce the chance of burning the mouth, airways, and lungs, thus using a bong to smoke is safer. The water can trap some heavier particles and water-soluble molecules, preventing them from entering the smoker's airways. (note there's a maps study cited below, which contests this)

Percolator - A water pipe percolator (perc for short) is a small additional sub chamber within the shaft of a water pipe that provides in-line smoke-water interaction via heat exchange and dissolution. Percolators come in different forms, such as dome, pedestal, tree and the more recent double helix. Depending upon the form of the percolator, it may or may not be diffused. However, the primary purpose of the percolator is to act as an extra chamber to filter smoke through water.Here's an example of a single and multiple percolators....

A secondary function of a percolator is to trap certain components contained within the smoke. Water soluble substances enter into solution as the smoke/vapor contacts the water, while less soluble substances pass through with relative ease. However, studies conducted by MAPS and CA-NORML have demonstrated that filtration by solvation is ineffective when consuming smoked cannabis.[1] The studies infer that the solubility of Cannabinoids, the active components in the smoke, are similar to or greater than that of tar, and so no (or negative) "filtration" takes place.

Diffuser - As diffusers can mostly be found on male downstems, the only percolator that diffuses smoke is the tree percolator. A diffuser works by utilizing a pressure differential between its bottom and top in/outlets. Reduced pressure at the outlet end is usually provided by the users lungs. The fluid at the inlet (i.e.: a smoke, vapor, and air mixture) is directed to the bottom of a column of water, where the pressure differential causes the inlet fluid to pass though the water in small pockets (liquid bubbles), and then rise to the outlet. In short, diffusers make smoke cooler, and rise evenly through the pipe, due to the water bubbles hitting the surface simultaneously.

Diffused downstem - There are lots of different kinds. Here are a few....
Inline diffuser -
Ash catchers (A/C) and precoolers - Ash catchers slide into the downstem and you put the bowl piece on top of the ash catcher. It filters out all the ash in the ashcatcher before it reaches the bong which helps you get a cleaner hit. It isn't really about smoothness (a perk yes) but rather to keep you from using up pounds of salt and tons of rubbing alcohol cleaning the main piece. Instead the ash catcher gets the brunt of the nasties while the bong takes on a lighter more brownish resin instead of tar black. I think the differences in a precooler vs. an ashcatcher are apparent.

I think the worst thing about an ash catcher is that, if you fill it with water, you must remove it from the piece before releasing your suction. otherwise water will go up the stem and get your weed all wet.  so, what did i miss here?! Feel free to post your own bongs/water pipes!

This seems highly unlikely though, as people can super cool their smoke using multiple stages of diffused water filtration followed by a large ice bed, and still get high. What this indicates is that the condensation is forming tiny aerosols that stay trapped in the bubbles for the most part, otherwise there would be a very noticeable decrease in high for every new stage of water filtration.

It's cool and all, but the mark-up on these things just for the name is disgusting. Find a local glass blower and give them 300-400 bucks and you will receive their masterpiece.
