PSN Fail

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/sony-admits-utter-psn-failure-your-personal-data-has-been-stolen.ars
Sony has finally come clean about the "external intrusion" that has caused the company to take down the PlayStation Network service, and the news is almost as bad as it can possibly get. The hackers have all your personal information, although Sony is still unsure about whether your credit card data is safe. Everything else on file when it comes to your account is in the hands of the hackers.
In other words, Sony's security has failed in a spectacular fashion, and we're just now finding out about it. In both practical and PR terms, this is a worst-case scenario. What did they get?
Here is the data that Sony is sure has been compromised if you have a PlayStation Network Account:
* Your name * Your address (city, state, and zip) * Country * E-mail address * Birthday * PSN password and login name
"It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained," Sony announced. While the company claims that there is "no evidence" that credit card information has been compromised, it won't rule out the possibility.
Their advice is to be safe, rather than sorry. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained." What can you do?
You are warned to keep watch over your accounts, and to be aware of your heightened risk of fraud due to the security breach. "For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of e-mail, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information," the company said. "Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information."
Sony has also provided a wealth of sources for data and protection against identity theft.
You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. For Maryland residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202; telephone: (888) 743-0023; or www.oag.state.md.us.
To be fair, Sony does apologize for the inconvenience. There is still no update on when service will be restored, but that is the least of your concerns if you have a PlayStation Network account. It's time to change your passwords, at the very least, and if you're like to be completely safe it's not a bad idea to cancel your credit or debit cards and request replacements.
We'll continue to follow this story as it develops.
TLDR They snatchin yo' info up, so ya'll need to hide your credit cards, hide your address, cause they hackin erry body out here.

I was just thinking about how gay the PS store was a week ago too....damn. This is really weird. I'm sure it's got a lot more to it all than even this though. It looks like it will be a very long time before the PSN comes back up, if at all "DUHN DUHN DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Im also a victim of sony's fuckup but you overreacted, just watching your bank account for suspicious charges is good enough, which you should be doing anyway...
Most people don't realize the risk of CC theft when using your card in daily life is just as big of a risk as using it online. Every time you hand your credit card to a waiter at a restaurant, a gas station clerk, etc you are risking your card info being stolen. Assholes have handheld card skimmers that can get your CC info without you really noticing, this happens all the time.
Also your card info is routinely stored on unsecured systems and transferred through unsecured networks, you're a lot more vulnerable than you think.

As low as this fuck up it it's still nice not having to pay to play games online. I don't have either but would probably still go with ps with that deciding factor. And blueray.

But the thing is, I only have to pay for it when I want to play that. Regardless it's also only like 50 bucks a year.
Playing games online is over-rated too, I really find myself only interested in single player play lately.
I've got a 6-7 year old Xbox live account.
PS3 is cool though, folding@home is run in the background of some special menu and you can leave it running it. I just hate Sony, and like Microsoft. Bill Gates is a Bro and gives shit tons of money away to charity.

But I think you need a live account to use services such as netflix ect as well.
And Bill Gates isn't even the CEO of microsoft anymore. I just don't like the marketing of the xbox. It's genious from a business perspective but requires you to pay extra for services that are already included with sony.

There are a ton of things you can do online on xbox live without a gold account. Many times my account has been downgraded to a silver account and I still surfed xbox live and watched free trailers, play demos, and watch xbox insider clips.
It's really not a lot of money though. Plus the interface is a lot smother to me.

I suppose that's just one of the flaws of the PSN. Since they provide a relatively free service, it's understood that it has some weaknesses in terms of security, they probably run off an internet server (or something like it) whereas xbox live probably runs on a completely independent server. I am interested to see how this will turn out though.

Also, I heard from a friend its because they put some new encryption in movie theater speakers in movies with Sony Digital Sound. When you try to record them on a cam to pirate movies, it says "THIS IS SONY LOL U FAIL" or something along those lines.
IDK how true it is. I didn't read into it, because I'm sure its just some bullshit I don't care about anyway.

Dude you're very nice for saying kinda of a big fuck up. This is a MASSIVE FUCK UP. The number one priority of any company that houses sensitive info such as financial records, in this case credit card info and such. Is protection of that data. Various companies small or big are constantly under attack by hackers.
The sad part about this whole situation is that it's 2011. And the fact that a company as big as Sony was successfully attacked is ridiculously embarrassing. I sure as hell hope they fired who ever was the senior officer for their IT security. I don't think there's a face palm out there that can illustrate how bad Sony fucked up.

Yes their entire executive IT staff should be fired immediately, Sony is so big it has more than enough resources to hire outside security firms to audit their networks and such, it should be bulletproof.
I wonder if this hack has anything to do with Sony trying to sue the hacker who cracked their console
Even after all this bullshit, PS3 is superior because of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor)

Yeah I know it's been posted before, but every time I see one of those college commercials I think of that.

you know what i did in english class? I came to class stoned out of my mind every day, i chugged vodka in the back of class, i put dead fish in the ceiling tiles. i put a gallon of old milk and orange juice in the file cabinet before winter vacation. i brought snakes in a tied up sweater and let them loose during class. i didnt go to school to learn, i went because i had to. i didnt care, and i didn't fucking listen to that stupid bitch. and i still don't fucking care. i tore the pages out of her books and burned them, and threw away all the books in the class, two books per day.

See, that term pedo gets thrown around a lot.
Is a 16 year old guy having sex w/a 16 year old girl a pedophile?
If not, then how is a 30 year old considered a pedophile for doing the same thing?
I think y'all need to look up the definition for pedophile.

The real failure here is that no one thought it was necessary to add another layer of security on peoples personal and financial information. Kind of a big fuck-up.
naw, i just can't argue this point enough... who the fuck are we dealing with here? this guy?
... no, we are dealing with Sony Computer Entertainment, a technical software engineering company that makes games.
how the hell are you supposed to stop the system war fanatics and corporate hacker douches trying fuck up every move you make? you can blame Micro-hacks, the by-far "busiest" corperations out there, for the business ends of these IP's, and hackers and piraters for all the shitty support.

X-box can suck my left nut, indefinitely, until it doesn't charge me to use X-box Live and they make a better upscaled system.
Mircrosoft can also suck on my left nut too, altogether.
Sony fucked-up by having a random person HACK their system?
Mircrosoft doesn't store their data that you give them and you are safe with them, right?!1 DURP! SURE!1
Are you involved in network security or a computer security specialist?
No. and good point. but i just hate how every gamer, computer user and theirs GRANDMA'S will jump on any bandwagon without looking what the others are carrying. it's all shit out there... Sony is one the better companies and they are shit on because of a technical scare...? they aren't going to get anyone's personal info, for fuck sakes and you can argue that, go ahead.
lol, i mean, if i were a technical security person, i'd tell you guys here that you are bitching at SONY for... NOTHING.
it's a campy little hacker douche who is fucking with everyone and is giving Sony an alarmist look to everyone NOT BUTT FUCKING their IP's with random violent fervor. so that everyone does it...

well, upon some further reading... i've decided to not side with Sony afterall; apparently they are shady too (like Google shady) and not just alarmist. i thought this was just about hacks and shit... but apparently, Sony is just as guilty as Microsoft for IP hounding. well, NOT really... (deciding who gets to what with your IP is what intellectual property is about) but holding all your PSN accounts in plain textfile is pretty suspicious, interesting and illegal.
and i suppose i can see why certain hackers would want to substantially discredit them, even though the aims are above the call of duty, they (Sony) do seem to run a gamut of trying frightfully hard to knock off useful features and rend their system to stop people from toying with it. yeah, i don't know waht i am talking about. jee, i should just go AND SMOKE MORE WEED

and seriously, it's not about freedom of dick-all... it's IP and that's it. people don't want these people to own their IP well then make your own, or just find a new system to devise how one is to entertain a video-game ravaged mind without having to own the rights to IP that SOMEONE ELSE HELPS TO DEVELOP. in essense... this whole Sony debacle will go down in one of two ways... either Sony will die and everyone will love the hell out of the other "more careful" consorts, OR this will blow over with nair a nip in the bud and everyone will be forced to hold these IPs with more scrutiny then before.
WHICH IS A BETTER CHOICE? knocking off companies through mass media or being more liable in what affairs they choose to go after? either way, seems like a win, but it depends with we want to continue having games being made. personally, i could swing either way... but i choose the alter option, for the fact that some games are wicked awesome.

Are you using IP as internet protocol or do you mean ISP?
Either way, I still don't follow what you are trying to say

Anyone can claim anything.
From what I've been reading, Sony never took those 3 little numbers on the back of your card, making it useless in most situations. And, if they DID take them, they're not supposed to be stored anywhere.
Also - fuck this shit, I'm hacking my PS3 and playing isos off an external drive. Sony can SMD, I'm sick of waiting.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

People can still use them without those 3 #'s I'm pretty sure, it just limits what you can do with them.
I'm gonna dig around and see if they did end up getting them.
