The Ultimate Question
    #547805 - 04/18/11 12:14 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

A scientist offers you the opportunity to be put in an isolation tank and live out a perfect life inside your mind.

The chance to live the rest of your life in a virtual reality.

No limits to anything. You explain your perfect reality, down to every last detail.

You'll forget you ever made the deal and everything will feel just as real.

Do you accept the deal or continue living in this reality?

The ultimate question? No, but a good one.
What would I do? Depends what day of the week you ask me.

This reality will do just fine.  My body wouldn't last long living in a tank.

I think it is implied in the question that conditions affecting your phsyical body will by optimal and not an important aspect to consider(and maybe even your brain tied in so completely you can never conciously be removed and there can be any set amount of "time" to be within, or no time at all). Or maybe not, but lets consider that. Then what? You can do anything in this virtual reality and it feels no less "real". Just think it and bam... theres is a feast of your most favorite things or the woman of your dreams lied out before you...

I prefer to be aware.

I would also prefer to just be made digital, and be more like an ai. Maybe even join a collective hive mind or two after drifting through .eu for a summer.

I'm leaning toward a yes though.

Would you still get all the feelings of this reality, and the connections to other human being that you get in this life? If not no way, I love the connections I have to friends and family and I feel my family would be far too sad and depressed if I disappeared into a tank for the rest of my life...

If I was a completely selfish bastard, yeah I think I'd go for it. The main dilemma I'm faced with, in regards to this question, is what sort of impact it would have on my family or other people who care about me that I would be leaving behind.

I don't think I could so easily resign the life I know in order to take up what I would consider to be a completely new existence. I guess I might have less troubles coming to terms with this if I managed to outlive everyone who could possibly ever care about me, and I simply wanted to escape from this reality once and for all. I think they call that death.
