Is it normal for the fan leaves to start to turn yellow/brown during the last few days of budding, right before harvest?

Yep.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

They really yellow up during the flush as they use the last of the nitrogen in the water/growing medium. Too much N delays flowering though, don't add any!

yeah, it's normal if youre flushing. if you look at bud pictures around the net you will some some fantastic bud that has a lot of yellowing leaves. This is just because they are reacting to the flush that the cultivator has given the plants. It's a sign of deficiency but is OK at harvest time, and is desired. It helps with the taste of the bud and with a few other things.
