Stretching before going out.

Hey all, so back home I used to grow tomatoes. I had a unusal technique that I had great success with. I would sprout my seedlings in little spouting containers under the shade to force them to stretch. After they gre ro about 3-4 inches I'd transplant them to there outdoor location. I would burry them right up to there leafs. Only reason I really did this was to cause roots to sprout from the stems allowing the plant to have a much larger root system. I am not doing this perpusly with my ganja plants but since I've started mine plants quite early and indoors(without exta light except from the window) so they have become stretched. My question is what are thr benefits of doing this and sideeffects?
I'm in Washington area so it's stil quite cold out but a few plants I have outdoors seem to be surviving the 30-50 degree weather. I was hoping this added root system will help with our harsh rainy windy cold weather. Anyone have anythoughts?

I'm also interested in hearing if this would help the plant(s) or not, BUMP.

I am willing to bet it can cause root rot.
Best thing to do if its too cold or windy is to make them a little green house.

Really? Yay! makes me happy im not the only one trying this!
With pretyt much any plant i grow i do this because i feel the root system gets more established before the plant grows up. Also feel like the root system will be one step ahead of the plant above ground. Thanks for that!
Why doesn't everyone do this?

I guess because it's not common knowledge, I didn't know about this until I read you're thread. Another reason could be that people generally relate plant stretching=bad

I would say most people who do transplanting will bury them up to the first set of leaves, The cotyledon. I wanted to clarify that. Burying any deeper then that will be a waste and could possibly promote root rotage. But I can say buried up to the cotyledons it makes for a stronger plant. More anchored in the ground. Imo

very interesting. I'm curious to know why you think it would cause root rot-age? I could see if it was sitting in very moist soil all the time but then agian that could go for any time you transplant. If the soil was very airy and not always drenched then wouldn't it just be fine?

Well burying your plant too deep can make the roots suffocate regardless of how much water is used.

AHhh ok. That is very interesting. It is good knowledge to have. I shall keep mine under the first set of leaves.
