How early in the year should I plant?

This will be my first year growing.
I live pretty close to Canada, Northeast US. Could I plant as soon as mid April, or when is the norm for planting? I cant find anything that specifies. I think if it depends on weather, I could as soon as early April. What other factors should be considered?

If you are sure the weather isn't going to turn on you(temp wise)
Then yes you can plant that early. I don't know a lot about the weather up there but it should be fine that late in the spring.

I plant in Northern Michicgan mid may to early june but I start the plants in like early march so they are at least a foot when I put them in the ground.

Take a look at when the local farmers plant in your area. Do some research on frost dates. The info is out there, just look a little harder. I would say april is pushing it. Personally I don't like to worry about the threat of a frost, that is why I plant in may.

I live in northern NY. I think its safe to start them inside as early as February or march then transplant them around April. starting them in April give them little time to get big and mature. also, The weather is wacky up here, so you dont want to plant them in march and have it randomly snow. so its best to start them inside as early as possibly then around april put them outside for good.

Something to consider
http://www.humeseeds.com/frost1.htm
When looking at last frost dates, its a 50/50 chance that it will frost after the recorded date for specific areas. I like how this website gives you a safe date to plant which gives you a 9 out of 10 chance of it not frosting after that date.

I have basically the same questions except I'm in smack in the middle of the Midwest. If I start them out indoors when should I be able to move them outdoors to veg and flower?

You can google the last frost date along with your state's name to get the last frost date of last year. General idea is to plant a week or so after that date to be on the safe side

Hopefully you didn't just plant those, that storm is going to suck. The best time is mid may.

Try thinking more "outside the box".
If you dig a hole and fill it with horse shit, it will produce heat, keeping your little sprouts warm. I say to plant in North East, start seeds inside in March, plant outside in this horse shit / soil hole and cover with a doom terrarium lid with air vents so the sprouts don't cook on those very sunny days, but then protected from very cold night frost.
