In need of a computer xpert
    #537683 - 03/17/11 06:06 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I have quite the dilemma here. Im trying to get into my old laptop (Dell Inspiron) but it has been like 5 years since I last used it and cannot for the life of me remember my password. So anyway I dowloaded Ophcrack liveCD to crack the password but here the problem... its not booting on startup, goes right to windows. So I need to change the BIOS setting to boot from the cd drive but I am running on an external monitor (the one on the laptop is fucked, totally) and the external monitor only comes on once I am in windows, both from a VGA cable and from S-video. So I cant see a damn thing in order to change my bios setting.

Am I fucked?

Maybe my only hope is to find someone who also has an inspiron to get all the commands to change the boot? Kind of sounds like a longshot...

There should be a key to hit to select your boot device. Or your live CD sucks and wasnt burned correctly

Supposed to hit F2 on for BIOS and then select which device to boot from but the problem is I cant see anything. As far as I know I burned the .iso file correctly to the CD, didnt just burn it like a regular file, and the program appears to be on the CD on my main computer.

You don't just select what to boot from, you change the priority. Move the CD drive up to the first spot...or, alternatively, uncheck the HDD for now until you're done with what you're doing. With it unchecked, it should never boot from the HD. If the CD still doesn't load, you know there was something wrong with your burning process or the ISO.

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

F12 right after it restarts, keep on pressing it, normally does the trick. Some other computer brands it's F5. Your sorta fucked. Try changing settings on the monitor. It might be impossible. Any computer past 5 years old is pretty useless unless you are a total geek.

OK, but I cant see anything still... even if I got the program running and it cracked my PW I probably could still not see it as the monitor only comes on once in windows.

The monitor is like half lines half multicolored madness....

Well, I would try another external monitor if you can as that may get you past the not being able to see part.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=external+laptop+hard+drive+adapter&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=6920772235798267606&sa=X&ei=i9qETenGC4HAgQful7XVCA&ved=0CEIQ8wIwAw#

Alternatively you can buy a cheap adapter like the one above and hook the hard drive into a desktop to get your files, or at the very least boot it from the desktop long enough to let OPH do its thing and retrieve your password.

1. Reboot 2. Before the windows logo comes up press F11 (Just start clicking it over and over again until the windows logo comes up.) 3. Just sit and let it do it's thing and when the login screen comes up click on the Admin icon 4. After it logs in go to control panel 5. Then go to User Accounts 6. either make an old, non, admin account an admin account or create a new one 6a. If you wanna make a new account just click Create a New Account > Pick a username > Set setting as an admin 6b. If you wanna change an account to an admin: Click the account > Change the Account Type > the Select Admin 7. Then thats it reboot and it's all done. Make sure not to reboot in safe mode though!

if you dont have anything important on it.. I would doubt you would since you havent used it in ages... I would just get system restore discs from the manufacturer and do a complete system restore. wipe it clean and then reinstall windows. Since it's an older computer it probably cant handle Windows 7 but finding torrents for Windows XP is easy. A lot of XP fans out there.

Windows 7 has lower system requirements than Windows XP. You can turn off the visual stuff that gives Windows 7 more graphics demands.

aero is a built in style that comes with windows starting with vista.  Don't see any reason why you wouldn't have it.
