My 2600° Paintbrush
#518078 - 01/24/11 01:20 PM (13 years, 10 months ago) |
|

Hi I'm theNPC. I blow glass.
This is my "paintbrush" a dual stage, triple mix GTT mirage with foot pedal.
I figured I'd show off some of my work to my new friends at the growery.org. Let me know whatcha think.
I don't have a ton of pictures at the moment and I don't get a ton of time to work being winter (my studio is a converted barn) and I'm in college, but I'll update the thread as often as possible.

That does look like a nice torch. Mine has been in storage and needs to come out! What do you mean by "triple mix". I always used a oxy/prop mix. Are you using a third gas or could that be a reference to the way it is combining the gases?

I've been blowing for about 3 years, previously on a small torch (gtt lynx). During that time I was away for about a year living in Orlando unable to work.
Now I'm back home (well at school technically) much more dedicated, with my upgraded flame.

"Triple mix" is the term coined by GTT for there patented technology of combining oxygen with propane, with a second oxygen. This gives there surface mix torches a flame hotter then even the traditionally hotter premix torches (gases mixed inside torch)

I've always wanted to get into this, but I have no idea how to start, and I sure as fuck don't have the money to start it
Ever since I was a kid, I remember doing a project on glass blowing when I was in like the 3rd grade.
How'd you start?
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.

Are you running two flow regulators off of one tank or two separate tanks? My Red Max doesn't get THAT hot. It would be cool to see what I could get done with that kind of heat. Was there much of an adjustment when you upgraded?

The Oxygen is from 1 tank (I run liquid in the summer and compressed in the winter). The oxygen splits and goes both into the torch's centerfire and to a foot pedal that controls the outer fire.
When I upgraded, you had to be more careful with gravity and boiling colors... but the centerfire of the Mirage is the Lynx (my first torch). The foot pedal is like an instant MEEEEELLLLLLLTTTT!!!! button/ suntan button. It helps when doing prep-work and large pieces immensely. I've currently been working on vac-stack prep for wig-wag/reversal work

Yeah. I dunno, I'm a very visual person. I like pictoral teks and black-and-white instructions when I'm starting something new. I don't mind experimenting, but if there was a "Lets Blow Glass" DVD like the "Lets Grow Mushrooms" one, I'd totally already be into it

I might make one in the summer. I've been talking with an instructional video producer that likes the idea. I'll keep the thread updated if it happens.

That's quite vague for pricing lol but I recommend waiting until spring for any commissioned work. The colder it is the more likely a piece is to check, especially when it has multiple sections and whatnot.

I've been curious about this for a while now...
I use gravity bongs, A LOT.. And the plastic and everything really fucks up the taste of the smoke, and if you leave any smoke in the bottom it stays around the plastic even longer and just tastes VILE... So I was curious about a glass gravity bong.. I can't really try it myself, unless I take a bottle and try to break the bottom off.. Even then, I wouldn't be able to screw on the cap/bowl..
I'm curious on how potentially awesome a glass gravity bong could be.. I'd do it myself if I knew how, it'd so be worth ordering a glass top piece for a gravity bong, that can fit standard screw on caps for plastic bottles on it..

I have a Chillum that fits in a 3 liter perfectly.
I have seen 100% glass gravities but never used one and don't keep the glass sizing on hand to make one.

gloryhole is soft glass and not pipes.
You need a kiln if you want to make anything that wont break right away.
Talkglass.com is a good forum for learning but there's an investment for equipment.
There are many torches you could use.

How is that Ironic in any way? You both create art, his art has a function whereas yours just hangs on a wall. Not only is your comment extremely rude and unfounded for insulting his art like that, I'm also offended that you haven't the slightest clue what ironic means.

I have an infatuation with glass art. It always interested me, but the day I finally got to see a skilled glass blower make a pipe for me in front of my eyes, I fully appreciated the skill and time it takes to make art like this.

umm... I don't like making tubes, cause that's not my thing but other then that the sky is the limit. I have a Mirage and its a BIG torch (bigger then the majority of pipemakers unless they do lathe work). I've made some pretty big multichambered bubs and such but it's rare that I get an order for something giant.

Some recent stuff
Also public service announcement: Anyone using the terms Double or Triple blown glass is bullshitting you. It a marketing term that is meaningless.
I had a piece I made thrown full force by a customer's angry ex-fiance at a hardwood floor survive because of quality materials and a proper kiln cycle.

PNC, I've got a quick question for you. Do you think this set would be sufficient for starting out lamp working?
http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Tech-Fireworks-Beginner%2527s-Beadmaking/dp/B000C11SD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309285330&sr=8-1
I figure I'll just be able to do beads with it, but I was wondering if blowing small pipes would be possible too. Thanks for the help.

Pipes use borosilicate coe 33 (hard glass, melts at 2300 degrees) that kit is for coe 96, 106 or something like that (soft glass, much lower temps). Any pipes you could make with that wouldn't survive your lighter hitting them but it's perfect for beadwork.
If you want to do hard glass this is the absolute most bottom rung torch you can use... link and you'll need several hundred dollars worth of equipment to make anything.
My current torch cost about 20x as much as that one.

I think that's the biggest thing setting most people back from getting started, the equipment costs.

So it'll cost about $500 for a start up kit with everything I need to get started?
I'm also wondering what the propane/oxygen torches need. Just a grocery store propane tank and an oxygen tank? I registered at talkglass.com btw, I'm really looking forward to learning as much as I can.

propane tank - from a grill oxygen - Big cylinders for welding or liquid (I use a 1000lb liquid tank)
Torch $100-$3000 (pipe torches are generally ~$500+ though you can on a national if you have patients) Eye-protection ~$80 Hoses and regulators $150-200 (cant be acetylene) flashback arrestors ~$50 refill on a propane tank (if you own one) - ~$20 oxygen ~$150/yr lease + ~$30/fill ...each tank (liquid is cheaper once you get to bulk use) Ventilation $varies upon your location but if you dont have it your poisoning yourself.
Tools - costs vary depending on what you're trying to do and how good you are at making your own but you will be spending a few hundred if your trying to make pipes (bowl push, tweezers, claw grabbers, graphite paddle are BARE minimum).
Glass - depends on what you want For example when I buy glass it's maybe an $800 order and shipping will be between $200-300 (you could live near a distributor and you don't need to order as much as I do though)
If your planning on selling anything you make you need a kiln ~$500 unless you can modify a used pottery kiln. (if you don't have a kiln literally everything you make will break)

So I'm really looking at a $1000 bare minimum.
What do you think about this kit?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Glassblowing-Beadmaking-Kit-/320719543130?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aac5fdb5a
What else would I need that's not included with it?
Thanks again for all of the help.

*Minor Bench Burner -I'd personally sell this and get a red max (same company) or gtt cheetah (I wont ever use a non gtt torch personally but theyre the Cadillac of torches) for a starter torch
If you stick with it you'll want a gtt phantom or carlisle cc (you can find cc's used for $600-800) for pipes
*Oxygen Regulator - needed *Propane Regulator - needed *Oxygen/Propane Hose Set, 12ft., 1/4" - needed *Flashback Arrestor Set - needed *ACE-202 Economy Frame Eye Glasses - ok but you should get better *Paddle, Graphite 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" - needed *Marver, Minor Torch - I'd sell with torch *Cleaner, Pin Vise Device - useful for beads *Tweezer Set, Serrated 4 pieces - needed (if theyre good) *Mandrel, 1/16" x 12" long, pkg of 10 - needed for beads *Mandrel, 3/32" x 12" long, pkg of 10 - needed for beads *Mandrel, 1/8" x 9" long, pkg of 10 - needed for beads *Mandrel, 1/8" x 12" long, pkg of 10 - needed for beads *Masher, Flat Small 1" x 1-1/2" - useful for pendants *Masher, Mini -ok *Nipper, Disc Rod -useful *Foil, Silver, pkg of 25 sheets 3-5/16" x 3-5/16" - useful pipes or beads *Tweezer, Foil & Leaf 4-3/4" - useful *The Complete Book of Glass Beadmaking - good for beads *Beadmaking 101 P1 & 2 DVD -meh *Spatula Tool Set - not necessary but can be useful *Assortment Effetre Glass Frit, 10 colors -soft glass (DO NOT USE unless you have good ventilation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) *Ceramic Fiber Insulation Blanket, 6" x 24" - helps prevents exploding glass when cooling but no replacement for kiln *Assortment Effetre Super 47 Rods, 13" -soft glass beads only *Release Bucket O' Mud, 08 oz. - needed for beads *Gloves, Kevlar 23" Wool Lined - pretty useless *Assortment Effetre 90 Rods, 13", 85 rods -soft glass beads only

So that's pretty much a souped up bead making kit? I'd be better off just putting my own list of materials together?
Lastly, I saw you mentioned something about a "national". What is that? I've seen it mentioned on other sites as well.
EDIT: Popped a quick look at this one:
http://nationaltorch.com/8m.html
$170, adequate?

Yea, most people are better of staying away from kits
I was talking about the one I linked too on the last page for $100 but either would work as the bare minimum.
If it is at all possible I would save up for a RedMax or a Gtt Cheetah

I think I'm going to go with the redmax, how much did yours cost? Is the model name 'painbrush'?
Also, I noticed the cheetah looked a lot simpler than the red max, any idea as to why?

Gtts are sleek and use a patented triple mix technology that allows them to be quiet, have more penetration with it's heat and be hotter then other style torches.
I rock a 4-stud Gtt Mirage dual stage with a foot peddle for the outerfire.
The cheetah is considerably hotter and has more flame types (big to razor) but the redmax has a bigger bottom flame and a rider torch to do smaller flames
Either would suit you its just between a pickup truck and a sports car.
RedMaxs used are like $450 Cheetahs are $550
Full time blowers generally have Carlisle CCs or Gtt phantoms - $1200 unless the go big
I went big but not huge, my torch cost about 2k and the largest torches cost like 10k

So, if I were to go with the cheetah, I'd be getting the sports car of intermediate level glass torches? If so, I'm sold.

The red max can do a little bigger but the cheetah has the precision, and penetrating heat and would make it easier to jump to a phantom or mirage if you upgrade in the future.
It's easier to fume with the pre-mix redmax rider but if I had the choice I'd get the cheetah.
GTTs hold there value so if you don't like it you can sell it for retail. There's a waiting list for many of their torches.
