How big of pots should I use to plant?

Ok so this is a curiousity thing. After sexing my plants and finding three males so far I have chopped them and I figured I would give the stem a good tug to see what came out. well to my surprise every thing did. there really wasn't any dirt left in the pot it was all in the clump. I first thought wow thats effing cool. then it got me to thinking a little more. obviously it appears that I had good roots they completely took over this pot. All three root systems looked the same. Are my pots too small? did I out grow these pots? If so how big of a pot should I get.
I forget how big mine are.... Like 10 inch pots or something. 3 gal maybe.. Photos for illustation.

Those were kinda rootbound but that's not as bad as it can get. I would definately transplant pretty soon, and when it comes to picking pot size, just get ones the next size up, if you get me, so one that's bigger, but not the biggest that you will use. I usually transplant into about 4-5different pot sizes through veg, and then have a final flowering pot, but I'm not sure how big it is actually haha
This is rootbound

Well its all up to you, people who flower in smaller pots are trying to keep their plants shorter by limiting the space available for roots to grow. Sometimes people put a seedling into its final pot size and never transplant but if you want maximum growth from your plant, transplanting is required

Ok so by restricting root mass you considerably constrict the overall growth of the plant. That makes alot of sense. I always feel like I walk away from this site having learned something new or put 2 and 2 together. Good stuff thanks man.

I start with seed in soil in solo cups. I transplant once into 8 inch pots. It keeps them smaller. I force at one month so they never really get that root bound.

With soil, huge pots are best. It's not uncommon for soil growers to use 7-10gal pots.
It's ESSENTIAL to use huge pots when growing in organic soil not feeding your plants with liquid fertilizers unless you want to run into problems and have pitiful yields.

1 US gallon per foot of plant. That is my general rule of thumb. Just stop transplanting when you don't want it to grow any more.

A good, solid benchmark is have 1 gallon of pot per month of grow time. For me, thats a 5 gallon pot.
EDIT: Now, the plant will grow fine if you go straight to a big pot. However, to get the maximum efficentcy from the root system, pot up 2x before you do the final potting. This allows the roots to fill their entire space evenly, where in a large pot to begin with they tend to clump in lower density ares of soil or medium.
