Oranges
    #504100 - 12/08/10 09:07 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Sweet, not very acidic. I eat like 1-3 oranges a day now, and I used to not care for oranges.

I can go pick an orange half green and it will be one of the best tasting oranges I've ever had.

Pretty sure these are the Tarocco variety after reading about blood oranges. If they are what I think they are, they are the highest yielding Vitamin C oranges than any other in the world.

This should be Florida's crop right here. After eating these, I don't even want to taste a normal orange again.

This tree hasn't been fertilized in years either.

Man, I have never even really liked oranges.... But these, these make me want to give them to people that come over so they can taste a good orange. The trees gonna get some ferts soon to see how that effects the fruit.

I don't know oranges schedule on fruiting so it's something I should look into unless it is a year round thing. I plan on taking cuttings in spring, hopefully I can get some trees going from some cuttings, this isn't a permanent house.

I've also been collecting whatever seeds I can get from these, they are for the most part seedless.

Don't bother with the seeds, you will most likely spend years waiting to taste a fruit that you don't even know the quality off.

Cuttings are the way to go if you want to preserve the flavor.

Yea, I am going to try cuttings, I wasn't even thinking about different phenotypes with oranges... hmm, well that could be interesting though.

You were one of the major posters in my thread about root stock so you should know everything you need to know about growing fruit tree's now

I might try to get into grafting fruit trees...

A few years ago my dads friend was telling me he knew some people that will pay good money for multi grafted citrus trees.

One tree with keylimes, blood orange, pink grapefruit, and another type of citrus would be a nice tree to have.

We didn't go into too much detail on fruit trees in your thread... Would the cuttings of this orange tree fruit within a year (it's an older tree)? I'm kind of assuming it would but not sure.

I wouldn't be sure if it would fruit in a year, depending on how long it takes the graft to take, then heal and assuming once that's all done a year would have passed and it would be onto its second season, and I would say it would fruit then. Keep in mind when I say all this I've never grafted a fruit tree myself, so I have no experience to go on :bongload:

Oh I'm not talking about grafting here, just rooting and getting it to fruit.

you could try air-layering.  And if you're interested in a good overview of this, and grafting, I suggest looking for the TAHS's text "Plant Propagation".  Any moderately large library should have access to it

Yea I knew what you meant, I just wanted you to know I don't have any experience  if you're interesting in methods of training your orange tree I can help you out there but not with much else sorry. There are so many awesome ways to train fruit tree's, I have a book on it :awesomenod:

Also, if you can track any images down of his work, I would recommend checking out Jim York.  Does some amazing and really innovative stuff on his property
