PH Question

So, I'm gonna admit...I've never tested the PH of my soil or water. Been around 10 plants or so now, and I've always just used my tap water.
I'm now at the point where I'd like to invest a bit more into my grows. I've been looking around at additional nutrients, etc...but I just remembered - a PH test kit!
I've never really had a problem with anything except a little bit of over/under watering, and some nute burn.
My question is, does keeping PH at the ideal level increase your plants performance much? They have all seemed to like the water I give them so far, and I'm kinda feeling like if it ain't broken, don't fix it in this situation...

Why should that mean it isn't real?

There's a chance once you add your nutes your ph is ideal, the only way to know is to test it, look up the general hydroponics ph kit on amazon, it is a really cheap kit.
Or you could buy the tester it's very cheap http://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-pH-Test-Kit/dp/B001TOYHMI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1291650914&sr=8-2
And if you need to adjust ph buy the ph up or ph down you need separately, although it may be worth the investment to just buy the full kit first... It looks as if the price has went up a bit since I've last checked. The tester by itself might even be cheaper found on ebay.

Does it increase your plants performance? HELL YES. Having your pH in check is essential in a grow, having it just off a notch like half a point can cause your plant to start locking out certain nutrients instead of absorbing them...Among other things, but that just shows how important it is. You will sleep better at night if you just check your damn pH. Don't buy a sack of weed this week and buy a pH and a PPM...Someone has one for sell but they are quite expensive for one of those, but if you plan to do much growing you'll need one.
