horizontal and vertical lamps

hey folks
hope this is a legit question ,recently today we had a power outage where the power went off and on and ended up fucking my 400w mh lamp , thankfully i had a 600 hps kickin around so we got her up and running but i was wondering can any lamp run both horizontal and vertical because i no the lamp works fine vertical but i only got a horizontal hood right now and i dont want to loose this lamp to my inexperience with indoors ?

Metal halides (I don't know about all) can only be run horizontally.
Knowing the bulb mfg would help.

It depends on the manufacturer AND part number. Some manufacturers make both and/or universal position lamps.

well some lights can be both.
I have some 100 watt hps that don't have reflectors and can be mounted however you like and you can add a reflector to it depending on how you want it to hang.

Running a lamp in a position it is not designed for will decrease its effective life. Amongst other things, this has to do with how the lamps recharge between off/on cycles.
Also, keep in mind that a lamp's effective life is typically much shorter than it appears. I see HID lamps running all of the time that have passed their effective lifespan (70-80% of rated output).
