DIY Carbon Scrubber * 3
    #33157 - 05/18/08 03:30 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

Supplies:

1x 6" to 8" Reducer
1x 6" Duct Cap
1x 8" Duct Cap
1x 5' Roll of 1/4" Hardware Cloth
2x 8" Hose Clamps
1x 6" Piece of 6" (duct) Pipe
1x Pair Panty Hose (color optional )
Carbon (from pet store)
Poly "quilt filler" (from craft store)
Sheet Metal Screws

Construction:

First cut your 6" piece of duct pipe. Cut your piece of hardware cloth to fit around the 6" pipe leaving a 2" overlap. PULL IT TIGHT.

Next screw the hardware cloth to the 6" pipe leaving 2" at the end of the pipe clean. This way it will fit into the 6" to 8" reducer.

Do this at the other end with the 6" cap. I used zipties to tie the hardware cloth down in a few spots.

Now pull your piece of panty hose over the whole unit and push it firmly into the 6" to 8" reducer.

The INNER CORE is complete.

Next, push poly fill into the space between the 6" to 8" reducer and the filter core.

Then cut your piece of hardware cloth to go around the 6" to 8" reducer and screw it on. I used zipties again to secure the hardware cloth.

Add prefilter if desired. (makes carbon last longer)

I used a hose clamp to secure it on both ends of the filter. I also used white yarn to stitch the seam.

Add your carbon.

Put a layer of polyfill under end cap.

Hose clamp the cap to the end for easy refills.

Now you just have to add your blower.

Yeah, Ive seen a lot of design and I put the ones I liked the best together. After I already bought the metal pieces, I found black ones that were the same size, and I wish I would have used them.

Just because its DIY doesnt mean it shouldnt look and work like the real deal.

How much carbon should you use? Do you still get that great carbon filter smell from these homemade ones?

there is cheap carbon on ebay if you can't find it locally, which I couldn't. you can get a 5 gallon bucket of granulated activated carbon for 30 bucks. so about 70 bucks total, and I'm sure 5 gallons would include a refill or two if your filter is only 2-3 ft. long.

Thanks Homeless, this is saving me alot of $$

Its cheap as hell to make this? costs me about 70 bucks most caron filters are 120 - 500 depending on size.

I like this design but the granulated activated carbon I had went through the holes in the 1/4" hardware cloth in the outside layer that didn't have the pantyhose. The pantyhose kept ripping as well. I think this tek would be better if it used stainless steel meshing instead of hardware cloth that way you wouldn't need pantyhose at all. Come to think of it window screening can be obtained very cheaply from a hardware store and would be very flexible to use.

Either way it works well.

Yes, the panty hose take sometime to pull over the hardware cloth without them ripping. Its best to just start at the end and pull it about 2" at a time. This same size filter name brand would cost around 400

It seems you could wrap a piece of poster board over the hardware cloth until you got the pantyhose on to prevent tearing, then pull the poster board out. But i`ve never built one.
