battery acid (HCl) for pH down?
    #478979 - 09/18/10 10:27 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Anyone use it? I need to buy some pH down soon and I'm thinking of trying to be as cost efficient as possible. I finally made my way through a gal bottle of pH down, it's so old the label is completely rubbed off.

I'm also thinking of possibly just using humic/fulvic acid as pH down, and getting something more beneficial into my nutrients. I've been using 1100ppm of GH nutes or so, 1ml of Advanced Nutrients Barricade, and 1gram of powdered humic acid for a pH of 5.7-5.8 which is ideal for my setup. I'm however running low on pH down and on humic acid.

That's debatable. I wonder how much I'll be using per gal. When using GH's pH down (apparently not the most concentrated) I use 1ml or so a gal. I hear it's literally drops in comparison using Advanced Nutrients pH down, just that much more concentrated. I'm thinking of buying a bottle of 28% HCl or muriatic acid for testing.

Battery acid is sulfuric acid, which is probably safer to use than hydrochloric acid. Sulfur is actually a plant nutrient where chlorine is not. :bigblunt:

You're right. For whatever reason one of my searches told me that battery acid was 28% HCl.

I work with battery acid every day, it is very cheap if you shop around. Battery acid won't burn your skin if you wash it off in under a minute, if you get it in a cut it sets your world on fire, and if you get it on your clothes they are as good as trash. Those are the only precautions I can think to give you if you plan on using it. I'm not sure how concentrated it is but I'd have to think it is way way more concentrated than pH down.

Oh man, I spilled HCl in an open wound on my thumb one time and nearly hit the roof! Fuck me....

Why not just use some vinegar or some shit that's more readily available and less dangerous? Would that work?

Vinegar isn't as strong and it tends to not change the pH for a long time. It would be far more expensive than regular pH down also.

pH kits up, down, and tester are 12 dollars on amazon. I think advanced nutrients is the brand.

It's the other way around. Advanced nutrients is way more concentrated then GH.

I was wrong about the bran in amazon, it is GH

Still the cheapest I could find on the web for these, and cheaper than every sellers on ebay. Less than half price than what I paid a couple years ago for the set I lost.

Battery acid just don't even sound good for something your gonna smoke to me :shrug2:

That's what I meant. For whatever reason I worded that very poorly. I meant to say when using AN pH down that I use drops in comparison to GH(which I use at 1mlgal).

I go through quite a bit of pH down. That 12 dollar kit wouldn't last me very long.

Have you considered buying the powdered form of pH Down/Up?  Sure you have to mix it yourself, but I bet you that you buy a big pack of the dry stuff and you won't have to buy it again for a long ass time.

Always get the better deal when you buy powdered stuff.  When you buy premixed stuff you're buying mostly water, but you pay for the convenience of not having to do it yourself.

I bought a gal of pH down from AN in liquid form already.

dry products sound like the best bang for your buck, but i would still mix into low concentrations before adding to my nutrient solution because fast changes in pH will force precipitation of some salts that would otherwise stay dissolved when the acid is introduced slowly.

for the record, humic and fulvic acids are actually alkaline compounds, they just contain the necessary (H3O+) ions available in water to be considered Arrhenius acids
