using household items to raise / lower ph

Doing some research, i've read that epsom salt, table salt (non-ionized), baking soda & sodium bicarbonate can raise your pH of your water, while vinegar is easy to use to lower your pH.
epsom salt in larger quantities than baking soda, but has anyone ever had experience using these? I don't want to go out and spend $$$ on ph UP and ph Down if I have stuff at home I can easily use. Limited fundage here.

I strongly urge you to buy quality Ph up and down. I highly doubt adding sodium to your reservoir will be good for anything except killing your plants. A decent Ph kit (up/down and test solution) will cost you about 12$. Killing your plants and having to start over will cost much more than 12$, worth the price in my opinion.

I have actually been using baking soda and vinegar to move my PH... If it is all you have, then it is all you have.
My plants are not liking it. I am stopping at my local hydro shop today to buy some proper chemicals.

i guess this will have be something i can't make by without. I try to cut costs where possible, like alternative designs for the grow room etc... i have also purchased more lighting. im gonna be growing some poppy too; for personal use, so maybe I can figure out a tek I can place here in the other grow-ables, to avoid that $130 hydroponic heroin book, so expensive. Out of print though, so i guess that makes the price drive up
i was hoping the home remedy things would work for pH; oh well.
