yea definately, i used cfls last time, for my first indoor gro, and then invested in the mh and hps for the next one, i still have a few cfls for seedlings, clones, and low budsites, but i will never use cfls again. They actually cost more to use, and they use less light to do it. The amount of light you get per watt from an hid light is waaaay higher.
go with the hid. You will get at least quadruple of your money back out of it i guarantee it.

starrider said: Why do people continue to grow with improper lighting. To get the best results you need to use HPS and MH lights.
Because not everyone can afford to throw down a couple hundred dollars on "the proper" lighting.
Don't get down on him for it; he knows that's what'll get him the best results. That's just being counter-productive.
Maybe instead you could suggest a different way to arrange what lighting he already has to maximize what he's got? Some sort of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism?

Personally, I still grow with CFL's too (for veg anyway)...it IS a lot easier to run out to your local walmart and spend $30 on lights than it is to buy a full setup.
Especially for your first time around.
However, I'm really at the point where I feel its almost a waste for me to keep this little 150w HPS and 150w of CFL. I can only have 2 plants going, and its not cutting it. Time to upgrade I suppose, the moneys just not there yet.
Point is, CFL's certainly get the job done and will definitely help you learn your first time through.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

CFLs get a lower lumen per watt but they can be placed literally centimeters away from your plants. I think if you can get a thin even canopy that CFLs can really preform. I've been curious about testing CFLs for flowering but wiring 30+ CFL bulbs would be a nightmare. I'd want to run at least 500watts before dismissing them.
HID are by far superior for any serious grow but if you peek around on the internet there's some successful grows using LEDs, CFLS, etc.
