Cheap Way To Move Cross Country?

Does anyone know a great way of getting cross country with all of my furniture. I'm bringing basically a bedroom set, some boxes of clothes and a few other things... nothing too big. I was thinking of renting a U-Haul but my friend said it was too much money and not worth it. I'm moving from Long Island NY to San Fransisco CA.... any ideas?

I'm moving out for school, I'll be attending AAU as a photography and cinematography major. I'm also going to take some classes in design. My buddies live out there and we're all going to buy an apartment together. Surfings is better. Medical. and I hate New York. So much. Me and my friends eventually plan to open a store.
And I'd sell all my shit, but its all brand new shit from ikea, nice stuff though.

Depending on how much shit you have to move it's probably more affordable to have your shit moved for you then to do it yourself. That being said it cost me 3 grand to move my girlfriend 1800 miles. Granted we moved 2,700 pounds of stuff though.
Looking at u-hauls site looks like you'll need between 2,000 and 2,500$ to get from NY to San Fran. That's just for the truck. I'd figure in at least another 500 bucks just for gas to get there plus any money you'd spend on hotels and what not.
