Nope. These types of fans ("can fans") do not have enough power to push air through a carbon filter. No reason for a speed controller, they run quiet and do not have a high output relative to a squirell cage blower or a high velocity inline fan, both of which can be used with a speed controller and/or carbon filter.

id only be using it for a 20 cubic foot space would it be able to pull enough air for 40cfm through a carbon filter the 6" is 160 cfm and 8"is 210cfm
to get the most cfm would it be better to have the fan larger than the scrubber and use adapters or the other way around or the same size
or am i gonna have to spend an extra hundred bucks and get one of these http://www.greners.com/fans-ventilation-filters/products/inline-fans-blowers/sunleaves-windtunnel.html

Would this fan work for a small box that doesn't need a scrubber or filter though? I'm making a 3x3 for my veg room, and since it's legal, I'm not worried about smell, just the air-flow...

yah it would definately work. You need to figure out how many cubic feet your growing area is and then get at least twice as much cfms on your fan. More is better.

Well, I'm planning on a 3x3x6, so that's 54 cubic feet, right? That one says 160 CFM so I think it should be fine for my purposes.

These fans are crappy at best, I bought one before I bought my big boy fan, and I can tell you this, if you need it for anything other than air exchange forget it..
This fan's main purpose is to boost air thats already moving, so that rating of 160cfm, was probably already 140cfm before it entered the fan..
