Simplest way ever, you can crumble cakes or whatever.... also for grain same way but crumbled http://www.fungifun.org/English/Casing

Rolling in verm is for pf cakes only, rolling a casing would be kind of a retarded act

If you are using a verm casing layer then it's gonna be shitty results but it can work just do a thin layer on top 1/4" and once you see tiny threads of myc poking through in about 5% slam that bastard into fruiting conditions.

Seriously though if you are doing grain you are best off spawning it to manure which is pasteurized then allow to colonize and fruit as is... casing layer or not the thing is gonna mass produce.

It doesnt have to be really thin, but it would be stupid to make it really thick. Mostly because it will take more time for the mycelium to ball up. Thus leaving more chances for it to get contams. With a thin layer it will pin quicker and there will be less of a chance of getting contams.

I use a verm/hpoo/coir/coffee casing. And not a very thick layer. The rolling thing is only BRF cakes and instead of rolling those I would just crumble them in to a tray.

And just for the record you do not have to have a casing layer, you can fruit without it, casing layer will just make for a more even flush if I remember it right and possibly more than one flush.

mycelium is poking through now but its not thick at all.
you cant even see it in a photo because of the clear wrap's light
reflections, but its there in different spots.

so i should put that in my fc ?
or maybe i should wait until its thicker?

Lets get a few things clear first okay. I assume you cased the cake right? Then wrapped it in clear wrap? I go by more than 5% for my casings but that is me. You can fruit it anytime now, it is pretty much a judgment call and everyone has different times they go by. I would say go ahead and fruit it if you saw spots a day ago(going by what you posted) then it probably has covered enough, go for it.

Might I suggest for you next run of cakes if you have not switch to WBS method by then, is to crumble 2 or 3 cakes into 1 large rectangle ziplock container, then then put a thin casing layer of verm and coir mixture with a knife tip of gypsum(this is what sheetock is made from) into the coir/verm to even out the ph of it..

I hope this helps if you have any more questions plz ask here or you can pm me

o okay thanks.
yeah this is my first casing and first grow.
i only had one fresh cake to use, so i crumbled it and cased it,right.

I think i'll fruit it today or tomorrow.
but thanks! i'll ask things as they start more growth and whatnot, if i dont know whats going on really.

Asking is the only way to find out. I remember my first grow and how nervous I was and worrying if things are going right. Get a spray bottle filled with water(filtered is best but tap water will work) and let it set for a bit. If the casing start shrinking and looking dry you can spay the sides of the casing, try not to get it directly on it, but if it is shrinking then it should not be that hard.

I just put my casing in the fc.  it;s a shotgun fc. i misted it once i put it in.

do i need to fan like you do with cakes?
do i treat the casing like a cake basically?

I guess also need to buy a light but i hear you can use lights of the blue spectrum.  i have a light that has a blue coating over the bulb, but i have no idea if that is in the blue spectrum or not.

From what I remember on those(shotgun style) as long as you have a fan blowing at it then you should not need to fan it. You do not need the fan pushing a lot of air, low setting is usually enough.

I use a energy saver 100 watt bulb for my FC. It seems a light is a light for them. I do have a reflector style hood on mine to focus the light downward.

im just going to use the light i have i guess. for only a few hours each day.

o, can knots form even if the whole substrate isn't completely covered by mycelium?

yes but it might take just a bit longer. I run 12/12 lighting but this is just personal way of doing it.

My SG gets dried out pretty quickly even with a fan about 45degrees off axis (that is: if we call the direction from the fan to the FC east then the fan is pointing south-east). What I do it just have the fan pointing away from the chamber entirely, just circulating air around the room.

And yes, OP, you can pretty much treat a straight-verm casing like a cake (though it will prefer slightly less humidity: less humidity means more evaporation off the casing which encourages pinning.)

hey if i only used the all verm casing, will the fruits not have enough nutrients to grow healthy or something.

Casings are supposed to be non-nutritive, otherwise you're just spawning to bulk, not casing.

Straight verm works fine as long as it's not too think, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually have that problem.

And you don't have to spawn to bulk to get good results. Grain is more nutritious than bulk subs anyway, bulk subs just have the advantage in terms of sheer mass and surface area so they can pump out massive flushes.
