This thread was started by one of our brothers who is having a pretty rough time right now. He is obviously looking for some hope, some meaning, some reason for living. He didn't ask about philosophy or a set of beliefs- he asked about God. i Stoner- I believe there is a God. For most of my life I've been a cynical, sarcastic jackoff who loved nothing better than to argue with a person of faith, and beat him up with cold hard logic.. I went through a lot of rough times, and considered ending my life as well. I finally had to set aside my false pride and bloated ego enough to realize and admit that I don't know everything. These people I sneered at had something I didn't- hope. I didn't just say" oh okay there is a God, and Jesus was his Son". I researched and went to different churches until I saw enough to convince me that it is okay to believe in something, that I'm not weak for doing so. I had my share of run ins with with judgmental Christians, trust me( I have a tatoo of the devil on my arm), I just had to realize that they too are human, and therefore flawed. I believe in God, and I believe that this life is a test. It's all about the choices we make, and how we treat our fellow man. You are at a crossroads, my friend. I'm glad you reached out, even if it was to us stoners.. This is the first time I've ever expressed my beliefs to anybody but my wife, so don't think I'm preaching.. just thought you might want to hear from someone who's been there and come through it better than ever.

This is original god -------------->
All this nothing bouncing around.
So god became
Which then created

A set of beliefs regarding God is religion.
Wouldn't that set of beliefs need to be more systematic? In fact looking at Websters they seem to confirm: all the definitions deal with systematic belief in a god, or gods, accompanied by worship, ethics, etc

I believe that all you need is some form of ritual associated with your god for it to be a religion
not real sure about that though

Most definitions regarding the subject are not set in stone.

Yea, defining religion is pretty difficult. As a lot have things others don't and a lot don't have things most others have.

Of course definitions change over time. However, yours seemed overly broad and useless.

Overly broad and useless.....kinda like religion
Quote:
religion - 5 dictionary results re·li·gion /rɪˈlɪdʒən/ Show Spelled[ri-lij-uhn] Show IPA –noun
1.a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2.a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3.the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
4.the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
5.the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.
6.something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice.
7.religions, Archaic . religious rites.
8.Archaic . strict faithfulness; devotion: a religion to one's vow.
Thats a pretty broad definition
So saying that A set of beliefs regarding God is religion is a pretty spot on short definition of religion

Awesome. Now lets talk about religion.
Religion is not hard to define. Religion in my words is a set of beliefs and rules influencing a persons thought and actions in their day to day.
Any disagree?
-------------------- Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

What's so broad about that. It's very absolute and simple.
You can't have god without religion and religion can be found without god.

How would the absence in belief for a god, or deity, concern "the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe", besides in removing such an element from the equation?
Also, things like science concern "the cause, nature" of the universe, and could even possibly concern purpose.
So again, limiting the definition in such a manner, while ignoring "esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs." doesn't strike me as very useful nor productive

That'll be like saying god created religion. A person personal religion is just that, their own.
What would you say about people who pick from many wordly religions and form their own philosophy. That person definitely doesn't believe in god.
