I'm planning on building a 5 x 5 x 5 foot growbox out of 2"x4" supports and thin plywood walls, and 3 coats of Kilz flatwhite. My question is that I have a maximum of 5 feet height from floor to ceiling. Since my floor space is 25 sq. ft. I'd like to get a 1000w cool tube hps. If my pots are 1 foot tall, and the bottom of the cool tube will be about 1 foot from the ceiling, that leaves me with 3 feet of space for the plant (tall growing WW clones) and space between the light and tops of plants. How much space should I allow between the 1kW cooltube and plants? Would a 1kW make sense for plants 2 feet tall? I can only afford one light right now, and still need to buy an inline fan and carbon filter. Thanks for any help.
p.s., just to clarify, I'm still in the planning stage, so it's not a problem to get the light before the fan
don't do it!!!!!!!!!! not a good idea, you would have to keep your plants including pot under 10", which is 2" less than just your pot. I have a 1k and would recommend at least 24" between top and bottom of glass (works but not best), 36" would be ideal from what I am seeing now but my ceiling is 7' tall. Also the heat build-up in such a small space would be killer, even air-cooled. Are you planning on adding a oscillating fan? working room? hopefully somebody else has some idea's for you, ie. cabinet growing (I'm clueless about)
wait, I thought the standard wattage for a 4' x 4' is 1000w? I have additional space, just not vertically. The total space in the basement room is roughly 10 foot by 12 foot and 5 foot height. 4x3x5 veg room, 4x3x5 flower room (1) and 5x5x5 flower room (2) - the one I have ?'s about. The flowering boxes aren't built yet, but I already have a 400w hps (non-cooled) for the 4x3x5 flower room (hoping to eventually upgrade this to air-cooled 600w). Or should I build a different setup, I attached the rough (really rough) sketch of the room; the veg box was already built into the room, the rest has yet to be built.
The only reason I'm building boxes within this room is because it's unfinished, and I figure boxes will reflect the light and contain the smell better than plastic sheeting on the walls, ceiling and floor, plus the cost of panda film.
Anyways, 600w hps is max recommended for 5 feet height? Looks like that's what I'm getting.... Can't wait for the age of LED's
*The actual dimensions are 9 ft by 12 ft (instead of 10 x 15)
actually might do the 4 x 3 room and change the 5 x 5 to a 4 x 6 with two 600w lights, gotta save up for quite some time before I do that. Will certainly be worth it though!
Just remember that you need 1ft above the hieght of your box. So if you wanted to grow in a 3X5X8, your hieght for growing would only be 4ft. The last foot is needed for the lights.
