Very interesting! I would have never considered using led, except for mothers, and clones. I would have thought it as being a big risk. I'm sure the prices will go down. LED has got a lot cheaper in all other applications. I like the low heat, and the low energy use advantage!

I was considering putting together a LED array of some sort for myself because of the awesome cool running and efficiency.
But then I started to do my research and more importantly, maths.
To buy the LEDs to sum up to a respectable lumen level, we're talking thousands upon thousands of LEDs. Despite running relatively cool and being supremely energy efficient in comparison to other types of globes, I realised that fuck it would cost a whole bunch on the initial set up and I'll be damned if I'm going to solder thousands of them together in rows upon rows come to think of it!
Think I'll shelf this project until I can find bulk super bright LEDs for just a few cents a piece. Nowadays they are upwards of a buck each. I just don't have that kind of cash on an experimental project.
Fuck that shit!

There's Quad bands 90w ufos for 140 shipped and 180w ufo flowering models for $220 shipped.

What were you planning on using? 1/10W diodes? In order to make it even slightly worth your time I would suggest nothing less than 1W diodes, but if you can track down some 5W'ers and still handle the heat output then you'll be rollin' fat

too much investment for shitty yields. loads of space usage and sometimes not even the right color spectrum. i'd stick with the 600w HPS. the idea is nice but it is still too expensive and not the best results.
