just wanted to throw this out there ,this year for my guerrilla gardens i have tryed using %50 peat moss with manure and bye using this ratio of peat in my medium i have cut back the work of watering bye well over %50 and considering at some location i got to haul water, this peat has worked wonders ,i have watered came back 4 days later after blazing hot days in the sun and my bags still have a good moisture content ,the only thing with this is you have to make sure the ph is right and there is no salts building up in the medium,so it is a good idea to give a good flush every few weeks with some nice natural water and let your medium dry out !
Do you use any perlite in your soil mix? This is also a great way to retain extra moisture while still keeping an aerated soil mix.
I'm glad you mentioned pH in your post too, b/c peat, as it degrades, acidifies the soil. Its pretty easy to control though, as long as you're not a soil recycler.
Good post!
