I have some rather bushy northern lights and I'm in flowering so to compensate for my cfl lighting probably not able to penetrate the lower part of the plant, I put a light on the outer edge on a stool, is this going to do any damage to the leaves because it's coming up through the bottom of some of the leaves?

No it will be fine. It is a good idea to put lights on the sides of your plants and rotate them especially when using CFLs.

I have a better idea! Score one of these http://www.wickedlasers.com/lasers/S3_Spyder_Arctic-96-37.html
Not only will you light your house on fire, eventually; you'll be blind after looking into the light for a second!
No but seriously you are going to need CFL's underneath because they are so feminine compared to the macho HPS.
