My First Grow - Outdoor Potted Soil - Diablo OG & Blue Dream *UPDATED *9/11*
#447247 - 07/16/10 08:30 PM (14 years, 4 months ago) |

Hello all, first time grower, long time smoker.
I recently picked up a clone of Diablo OG and a clone of Blue Dream and recently planted them in a potting plant outside.
Here are a few pics:
I've never grown before, but from what I've read it doesn't seem too difficult. Nonetheless, any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated .
I'll keep this up-to-date as the days go by.

You need bigger pots and nutrients, your clones look skinny.

Those clones look great to me. The pots they are in are big enough for now. Do you plan on using fertilizer? What kind of potting soil did you use?

I do plan on using fertilizer, but I'm not sure which to get for each stage still. I did use potting soil, and it was Miracle Grow MaxGrow.
Quick question for anybody though, I've read so many different pieces of advice on how many times a plant should be watered, and I feel overwhelmed. What would be a good rule of thumb for watering schedules and fertilizing schedules?
I planted these yesterday, and for there first watering I gave each plant 1 cup of water with no fertilizer in them. I didn't want to overdo it, because I've heard it's very easy to overwater/kill marijuana plants.
Today my Diablo plants leaves look more droopier than they were yesterday, but my Blue Dream plants looks just as strong as it did yesterday. Any suggestions on what to do to the Diablo plant? Or should I just let it be for now?

Okay. First of all- do not use Miracle Grow products in the future. It causes various problems, and is notorious for producing shitty weed(it contains relatively high levels of harmful metals and contains slow release fertilizer). You will be fine because you have another transplant in the near future.
Fertilizing- you will probably not need to fertilize at all for a while. Your soil already has chemical nitrogen in it. When the big leave at the bottom start to turn yellow, start using a balanced fertilizer or a hydroponic one labeled "Grow" (anything with a high nitrogen content).
Watering- Cannabis likes a lot of oxygen available to the root system. Roots do not like being wet for long periods of time. Wait for the pot to feel very light (no water in the soil) before watering. Get a feel of how heavy it feels when fully watered. If you use this method, it will force the root system to expand between waterings, so when you water there will be explosive growth. When I water, i submerge the pot up to the soil line in a bucket of water. That way, all the soil in the pot gets wet and it leaves no dry spots where roots cannot grow.

Thanks for the advice, Smoakland.
Here are a few pics of my plants from today:
As you can see, the leaves are drooping pretty significantly. I gave each plant two quarts of water 5 minutes before taking these pics.
The weather here has been in the low to mid 90's all day, so maybe I need to add more water?
As for now, I'll leave them be, and keep it simple.

You are likely over watering. As I said earlier, drench the whole pot and then dont water until the plajnt is almost wilting from dryness. This will help it develop an extensive root system.

Done, and done. I submerged the plants in water for about 5 minutes on each plant. Within 45 minutes the leaves perked up, and looked more lively! I'll be sure to try not to over water these babies.
I'll keep this up-to-date as necessary.
Thanks again, Smoakland.

5 mins is too much. until the soil stops bubbling is long enough.

I'm assuming that nothing is wrong, but here is an update with my plants:
Both look pretty good to me, except for the one leaf that looks dead on the blue dream plant, which is the top pic.
No watering has been done since Saturday, and now that temps have dropped to the low 80's, I can move the plants into direct sunlight.
Hopefully some good growth is coming soon.

Update:
Its been a week since I've updated this but here goes:
There is some growth, but it hasn't been exactly booming.
I haven't watered them for a week, but the soil is still slightly moist.
A few of the leaves of the bottom of the bottom plant just straight out turned yellow and died recently. The top plant had one leaf that died.
Should I be worried? Should I water more fertilize, or just leave it alone?

Sounds good, Smoakland.
I looked in my shed and found these two high N fertilizers:
Either of these good? Or should I go buy something different?

Here's an update with the plants:
First pic is my Diablo OG. Had some problems with caterpillars, but that's been resolved.
Second pic is my Blue Dream. Definitely a nice growing plant so far.
I'll try to update in a few weeks with progress!
