DIY cal/mag
    #442941 - 07/07/10 10:20 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hello folks,

A lot of people buy cal/mag for 50 or so bucks a gal. I was looking for alternatives and thought I'd just buy some calcium nitrate off of ebay and use that as needed. I came across a post not long after by a poster by the name of fatman7574 and he made his own diy cal/mag which is literally 100+ times cheaper.

fatmans Cal-Mag

Sorry to take this off topic, but is it necessary to add cal/mag even though you're using a complete fert like Floranova?

depends on the strain. GH nutrients are notoriously low on calcium and magnesium, some strains are fine, and others I've had to supplement. get to know your strain in the first run and your second time through with it will be amazing

General Hydroponics has higher magnesium and phosphorous than Canna(coco a+b) or Botanicare (PureBlendPro). Canna and Botanicare have higher Potassium than General Hydroponics.

I haven't seen the numbers for calcium but I think General Hydroponics 3part has adequate calcium. The micro has 5%

Pure Blend Pro Bloom has 1% calcium @ 18ml feeding that's 58ppm calcium

Micro has 5% calcium @ 8/16 feeding that's 130ppm calcium I think that's fairly adequate regardless of what you're comparing it to.

Assuming canna a/b is the same as House and Garden the calcium % isn't listed on the label :S

Right well regardless of the percentages the fact of the matter is that thousands of growers experience calcium deficiency when using ANY of those nutrients with Cannabis. Cannabis is a VERy calcium hungry plant

but then you're messing with the ratios of all the other macronutrients micronutrients as well. The floramicro is the primary contributor for nitrogen in the lucas formula and you don't want to overdose that. It's much easier to just buy a calcium specific supplement

Besides possibly being a waste of cash, would there be any drawbacks to it's use within the recommended dose range, just as a possible safety net??

I wouldn't use it as a safety net, I would apply as a corrective measure if a deficiency becomes apparent

This is true, however many nutrients use 2.5-3times as much Nitrogen as the 8/16 mixing of GH ie supernatural brand. I can only assume cannabis is VERY nitrogen tolerant.

I'm not looking to use Lucas btw, I've looked into it and thought it was a good read and that it's important to know what you're feeding. Even Lucas and the other contributor say that many nutrients can be added in excess and not be harmful.
