I would recommend any potting soil that does not contain any slow release fertilizers (hard to go wrong if you buy something organic). Make sure it has a lot of drainage. I personally am using 50% Black Gold with 50% perlite.

It is hard to have too much drainage, and perlite gives the soil good drainage. The numero uno problem for new growers is overwatering, which is harder to do if your soil drains well. Good drainage allows the roots to have adequate air. The only drawback is that you have to water more often, but this is not really a problem if you are indoors doing a small scale operation.

Yup. Remember to wash your perlite (put it in a bucket of water and only use the stuff that floats).

a rough estimate says 50 watts per square foot so 600 watts should be enough for 12 square feet of grow space. You are wise to just use the seeds that you have for your first grow. Who knows, maybe they have excellent genes.
