I'm engaged and some time after my fiance and I tie the knot, I'm thinking about moving to California and starting a medical marijuana dispensary. I was wondering if anyone here had advice on laws, whether or not this is a wise decision, and business in general. Thanks.
Im pretty sure the industry is probably flooded with people trying to get their foot in the door but im sure if you find your niche you could be quite successful

I'm sure you saw my reply to your question on our sister site, but here it is again for Growery members who may benefit from the perspective:
Quote: The state laws do provide for a dispensary's right to exist, however individual municipalities will have their own laws, and as you will no doubt find out, there are some cities where it's very easy to setup a shop, and there are others where it is pretty much impossible. The bottom line is that the rules defining how dispensaries must operate are ridiculously ambiguous. Frankly, the situation has not been adequately addressed at the levels of local (city) government. Because of this, you will be taking a gamble as newly defined laws can be enacted without much forewarning.
I live in the Los Angeles area, and I believe there are quite probably over 1000 operating dispensaries at present. However, the city is trying to find a way to limit the number of dispensaries and further regulate exactly where they are permitted to operate. With the proposed guidelines, it is conceivable that the ~1000+ operating dispensaries could be whittled down to under 200. And of those 200, there will likely be several that will be required to move to new location that complies with the new zoning standards for this type of business (for example: 1000 feet from any school, church or other dispensary, etc.).
So as you can see, it's a shaky ground to be on at the moment. I personally would not risk my own safety and capital on opening a dispensary at this time in California. But if that's the risk you want to take, I would simply advise that you make sure to keep impeccable records, conduct your business in a professional manner, only serve patients with verifiable identification and credentials, and find yourself a damn fine lawyer!
