HPS LIGHT: 250 watt or 400 watt???
    #419429 - 05/17/10 06:56 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Hi, i am ordering a high pressure sodium complete setup complete with ballast, reflector, and the light. I am wondering if i should get the 250 watt or the 400 watt, price difference really doesnt matter to me, what i am looking at is a walk in closet which is about 4 by 6. Would it even make sense to get the 400 watt in this small of a space? and would the 250 watt bulb be enough for my closet space?
i plan on having 4-6 plants in there.

Also around how much would the two lights differ in my electric bill be every month? It costs  me 12 cents per kwh.

Thank you for any input from everbody!

400w or 600w for that space/plants imho

as far as power bill goes, alot of things factor into the price jump
for some people a 400w would add $40 and some it would add $100 it really depends

I do not think a 400 watt light will add that much to a power bill. Maybe like 5-15 a month.

A 400w light burning 12h a day for 30 days will cost $17.28 if it uses exactly 400w and a kwh cost 12 cents.

I have a Sunlight Supply catalog with power usage tables and according to it a 400w light uses 460w of power and at $.12 per kwh, running 12h a day for 30 days would cost $20.22. According to the catalog a 250w light would use $11.88.

Is the floor of the room 4'x6' or is the room 4' wide and 6' tall? If it's 4' wide and 6' feet deep 2 600w lights would be sufficient. If it is 4' wide and a foot or so deep a 400w would be good if you use a vented hood.

Read this post, stickied in the Grow Room Design forum. On the second page about half way down, captain.koons lays out the formula like so...
https://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/50049/fpart/2

wattage*usage=consumption
consumption*rate=cost

for example:
250w * 24hrs = 6kWhr
6kWhr * $0.12 = $0.72 (per day)

$0.72 * 30 days = $21.60 (per month)

Also, I forgot to mention, though it probably goes without saying, that one should always remember to consider the wattage of fans and cooling devices because their usage goes up as well when increasing the wattage of the light itself.

Wow thank you guys alot for the exact numbers, i wasn't expecting that and that was quick too! Okay the closet is huge its a walk in closet. I would say its dimensions are about 4 feet wide, 5 or 6 feet deep and its about 8 feet high. Its a walk in closet. i am not planning on completely filling the closet simply for security reasons.

Another questions, are there big differences in the amount of heat created by the different size lights? and would i have problems keeping the heat down if the closet is sealed up, i will have fans in but will i need an exhaust out of the room?

you don't wanna grow in a sealed environment
you want to exchange the air in the room every 5-10 minutes atleast

the heat goes up as much as the wattage

Your plants will thrive best with constant air circulation. One reason is that a plant can only use the CO2 in the air that is in a small area right around the leaf. If the air is stagnant, the plants will have a hard time respirating to their full metabolic potential...  meaning for you, less bud.

You should try to find a small oscillating fan or two to put inside the closet to move the air around.

As for the heat; well it's going to build up and it's got to go somewhere. As Amnesiac said, you may want to research vented hoods.

Okay update the closet is 5x5x8high. Would a 250 watt be sufficient to grow in there? or do i have to go with the 400? My only concern at all is the electric bill, because it was recently 450 a month and ive been doing all i can to lower it, so im looking at things like okay how much is the electric going to be for the light PLUS how much more will i have to run the A/C because of the light, things like that. Times are hard, all my money is going towards the light and my hydroponics setup. But THANK YOU though beetlejuice you are GREAT!!!

Okay i am ordering my light from HTG Supply, any word on them good or bad?
Also how much would of those vented hoods run me?
And another question how difficult would it be to provide circulation, i mean am i going to have to put holes in the wall or ceiling, or will the oscillating fans be enough?

Leaving the door open will just make the light take a little longer to heat up the space, as it would have the whole room to heat up (or make your ac run constantly). You will need to bring fresh air into your closet from outside through passive intakes and force it out with a fan. If the closet is on the first level of the house I would bring air in from under the house or the basement where it will be naturally cooler then force it out into the attic if it is a single level house or through the nearest wall to outside if not. This will keep you from raising you power bill from having you use your a/c more in the rest of you house because your room would be isolated from the rest of your house.

You would also be better off getting the 400w light for that size room, a 1000w light would be even better because it can light a 4x4 area. But a 400w or 600w would be good to start off with and still leave a little room for expansion.

You can get a 600w lumatek ballast bulb and 6" air cooled hood for $330 or a 400w for $250 and then you can get a 6" fan for $90.

I've never ordered from HTG supply so

Would get em both for a closet that size or two 400 watt lights.
4 by 6 by what?

Calculate your rooms cubic feet by multiplying length by width by height.
Factor in the heat load of your lamps.
Get a fan with enough capacity to move said amount of air as an out take and place it along the top of your grow show.
Get a fan rated at half the amount of cfms as your outtake fan and place it along the bottom as an air intake.

I think they're pretty decent. I haven't encountered any complaints about that site. Depends on which hood you get, but I'd say around 80-150USD.

In regards to air circulation. Unfortunately, getting a vented hood without a dedicated cooling system for the light, is pretty pointless. Unless you get some kind of inline fan that is pulling air through the vented hood, your vented hood is going to do jack shit and that room is going to get hot fast. Remmember that since you'll be using a 400w, your light has to actually be within a certain range of the plants to be effective. Usually this is within 20inches - so unless you have adequate cooling for the light, your plants will really not be happy due to the heat.

An inline fan will cost you around 150-200USD. Though, there are some teks on here that show you how to rig up a stanley blower to do the same exact thing, and I think they're like under 40USD.

--EDIT--

Here is a link to the tek I was talking about: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=29341

I wouldn't worry a ton about rigging up an intake like that. Passive intake should be fine. Just make sure your exhaust is going out of the grow area.

Okay so i have to have air circulation no matter what, i understand that now. I have never used HPS lights before,

how much of a temperature rise am i going to be looking at? I mean am i going to walk in my room and its going to be around 100 degrees? or 90 or what? I keep my house at 78 degrees.

Are there any other kinds of lights i should look at, where i will not have as much heating problems, but will produce the same outstanding results as the HPS lights?

I really appreciate all of your input!!

Just in case anybody cares, here is the light and setup that i am looking to order
https://www.htgsupply.com/growlights.asp?categoryID=1&subcategoryID=155&typeID=55
with the metal halide conversion bulb too.
