>>HELP<< I'm stuck, help me design a cheap, small and stealthly grow box (First Time Grow)
    #411125 - 05/03/10 06:15 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Alright, this will be my first time growing. I had a previous thread but it didn't really help. I'm stuck since I don't want to spend tons of money and I want this to be stealth. I was looking at the AeroGardens but it's too expensive and I know I can build a normal one for cheaper.

I'm limited to a really small amount of space, no more than 24in wide, 18in tall, and 16in in depth. Here is what I'm stuck on basically:

I need this to be based in a box, I'm looking at Sterilite boxes now but a cardboard box would work fine. I've been looking for days but I haven't found a setup that would fit my space and budget requirements. So can someone link me to some good products, I've got a pretty good looking ballast on my mind but its expensive for a 150w($80+ shipping).

I'm not trying to grow alot, about an ounce, I know I can fit at least 3 plants in this space but the price and what I'm going to fit them in is the real problem. Help me shoot for under $200 for a relatively good setup.

You can do hydro with the same work and space, I don't know if 16 inches wide is gonna support two plants.. Boxes don't use electricity, light do. If you're set on LED's go ahead and get one of those 90w UFO knockoff's, should have some decent results in the space you're talking about. And they use little electricity and can be cooled fairly easily.

if you are as concerned with stealth as you are seeming to be... you'll want a carbon filter.

I use THIS

And I use COCO and HESI COCO STARTER KIT

Do a little research, and don't get me wrong i LOVE the growery... but icmag forums contain a LOT more info about micro and coco growing - it's a different atmosphere though.

check it out yo

alright so, checked out the prices on the ufo lights unless I'm looking at the wrong ones I can't afford to spend that much on light bulbs so I'll probably be getting regular bulbs I guess.

I'll check everything out some more later, thanks.

How about this? if you can't drop that on lighting, you won't get far in this hobby.

Thats much better, ufo lights cost $300+ apparently so no leds. I guess I'll need some more fans though since all of the heat.

Yeah, a couple small fans should do it. A 150 shouldn't get too awful hot. Or if you're still interested in the LED deal, maybe you didn't see, but there are 90w UFO lights on ebay for like $140-$150 shipped.

alright so I'm about ready to get everything started up.

How much do you think this will run me not including the box?

Also this is going to sound stupid to some, if I use a cardboard box instead of a wood box will this have any affect on my plants? Don't worry about the heat its industrial and meant for alot of heat and weight. I tested it out with a lighter, it didn't burn at all, magical right? If I can't use a cardboard box can someone give me a name of or link me to a good box for this setup.

Here is what I got:
-Heavy Duty Cardboard Box
-1x 150w HID
-2 High Pressure Fans(120mm, silent but move more air in a smaller space.)
-Plant "supplies"

You could use some pvc piping and make a frame and then wrap in balck/white poly and have a nice tent. I don't know about using cardboard..

18" of height PROBABLY wont be enough space because you have to consider
a) pot height
b) plant height(from medium)
c) Space taken by lights.

sorry to burst your bubble man.

Rubbermaids are cheap...

you can add 2" to that height but it won't really make a difference I don't think. I'm still willing to try, I'll just trim them more and get them wide and short if I run into problems, the pot height won't be too tall, around 5"(I have a buddy who grows in this).

I was talking rubbermaides stacked like THIS

But if you know someone pulling good yields out of an identical box 'id say goferit

Just remember that typically the more time, effort, and money you put into this hobby the better your results will be.

Actually, I'm probably going to get a small Aerogarden and some easy auto flowering lowryder, final expense will be around $100 so even if I fuck up I get some experience without losing tons of cash. Thanks for the help though.

Yeah, I'm going to see how hard it would be to mod the lighting perhaps try and get a HPS/HID in there without too much risk of fire, again for security this will be thrown in a box with intake/outtake fans with carbon filters. If everything works out good, I'll post some pics but I won't start with this for a good 2 weeks, I need to pay some bills

I have seen some pretty sexy aerogardens though, it'll take a few months probably to get genetics down and I'll have to trim them alot more. Its alot cheaper though and once I get everything rolling(ha ha, get it?) there should be a chance for some good buds.

I dont know if anyone has said it or not but putting a HPS light in a cardboard box sounds like a pretty bad idea. Just go for a bike ride, find a nice secluded place and grow a couple plants. Get an autoflowering strain and find you a nice spot. Auto flowering strains stay low most times and are done before choppers start looking.

Hell, you dont even have to plant them in the ground. You can go out for a nature hike and throw a rope up a tree and lift the bucket containing the plant up in the tree. You would want to use a camouflaged bucket and rope of course. Or if you are up to it just climb up the damned tree and put the bucket up there.

There are numerous options to growing outdoors. And if your space is limited to a card board box, then you should definitely do it outdoors. Just get some fox farm soil and get to it! Prolly cheaper to just get an autoflowering strain from drchronic or attitude seeds and a thing or two of foxfarm soil and go out doors.

Sounds like a plan, even if I fuck up I'd only be wasting money on seeds and some dirt. Going to get some good lowryder and throw that shit in ground.

Thats what I would do if my space was that limited. Just get some lowryder crosses some fox farm soil some buckets and get them up in the trees. Its pretty simple especially if you are just wanting smaller amounts. Now commercially you wouldnt want to try and hide them in trees.

But for your situation it seems you need to be as stealth as possible. And trees are good for that, just dont pick trees that are too thick. Maybe watch the tree during different times of day and make sure it gets plenty of sun within the tree canopy.

I have a pretty good idea where to plant them, I'm going to have a few sets of 3 plants in a few places. Any guides on growing lowryder outdoors? Any recommendations for growing in Maryland?
