Are clones supposed to wilt?
    #406442 - 04/25/10 09:27 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I ask this, because my clones never wilted. They look perfect...like they are little plants growing. Theres no sickness to them, no nothing. Later on tonight will be day 3 for them.

I dipped them in the gel, and put them directly into the dirt. Any tips on how I can check for roots? I've heard 8 days is pretty much standard for roots starting. Is there any simple test I can give them even though they are planted in the dirt?

Also - once I know they have roots...how long until I can move them into the veg room? I figured 2 weeks in their little cloning room should be plenty, right?

Also - I know I'm supposed to mist them a few times a day...I notice one clone doesn't even have water on its leafs anymore when I mist it. Is it drinking through its leafs? It must be drinking quite a bit!

Thanks guys. :stoned:

8 days is really fucking fast. I wouldn't count on it. But you might get lucky.

The leaves are the energy reserves and they will wilt and change colors to some degree as they are converting the storage cells to energy to power root production.

Watch the hole in the bottom of your container is the best root indicator.

Simply because clones can go from no roots to 2 inch roots in a 24 hour period.

As long as you keep your dirt moist you don't even need to mist your clones.

Patience is the key to cloning. It's not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when".

Ok, good call :]

Also - I heard that they need to be misted, because the only way they can get water is by drinking through their leafs, since they have no roots.

Plants "drink" via diffusion through plant cells. Not just the leaves.

The leaves contain stomata that regulate transpiration.

Transpiration basically describes O2 and H2O loss through the stomata openings.

The loss of H2O causes a negative pressure within the plant making it bring in more water.

Plants lost 95% of they're water through the surface of their leaves.

Along with the water comes nutrients.

Water moves from the bottom of the plant up.

If you sit back and look at the big picture this all makes sense.

Water leaves through the leaves. It comes in through the roots.

Roots are specialized cells that spiderweb out with the main purpose of creating more surface area.

More surface area means more diffusion means more water means more nutrients.

Plants don't want to "drink" through their leaves.

It's my belief that misting the leaves could actually slow down root growth because your not designating a specific area of the plant that you want roots to grow.

Cells change over time due to external environments.

If you create a dark moist environment isolated to the bottom part of the stem, which is exactly where you want the roots to grow anyways, there's no confusing the plant.

I never mist. It's counterproductive.

I'm sure 90% of the people here will disagree with me, but Biology is my life. There's not a day that goes by where I don't learn something new.

You raise a very, very good point man. Maybe when I have more room for error I'll do some experimenting!

If they are severely wilting then you know the plant turgor pressure is too low.

Why do plants lose leaves? Simply to fight dessication.

Why do you see people clip leaves on clones?

Because they are reducing the surface area of the leaves to stop too much H2O from escaping.

Finding the perfect balance should be the goal.

If your plants are severely drooped then you might want to look into reducing the amount of/or surface area of your leaves.

Or raising the humidity/misting works(but you already know what I think about that).

It's definitely about the balance in my opinion. Out here the average RH is only about 15%, so without a humidity dome your cuttings will be wilted and dead in 24 hours. I use a dome just to keep the RH reasonable

Lookin' good. I also cut a few and put them in some rock wool. We'll see how those do. A few of those ones wilted, but 2 of them haven't changed at all just like the soil ones.

And I dunno about a log...:tinfoil: Originally I had intended to...but...:tinfoil:

I read up a lot about cloning a clone (I used to be under the impression that it was a bad thing, and it broke down over time) and after reading, I've decided I'll just do that. I switched my mom to flower, and I'll just clone one of these clones before I stick it in the flowering room.
