How do you Flush a Soil-Grown Plant?
    #406621 - 04/25/10 07:47 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

So I've searched awhile now for a photo-tutorial on how to flush a plant that is grown in soil, and I haven't found anything. Not even in the database search engine (i.e. not forums).

Can anyone fill me in on how to do this? Or maybe link me to a thread that shows it in detail, with photos?

Here's my understanding of it from comments from my grow log...

Step 1) Get 3 times the amount of your pot size (i.e. 3 gallons of water for a 1 gallon pot) distilled, pH balanced water.

Step 2) Put plant in a bath tub or outside, and *slowly* add the water over the course of a whole day. Let soil dry a little between "flushing"

Step 3) The last 1/3 of water used for flushing should have a vegging fertilizer in it.

Step 4) Do not water for a day or until the soil becomes dry again.

Is that it?

I'm about to do it right now (Sunday Night) during the dark cycle, from about 7pm tonight to early morning (around 3am in the morning). Is that enough time?

I have to flush it. I'm about 2.5 weeks from harvest, (I think), and I keep getting advice to do it.

Any help is highly appreciated.

OK, so I have to use a special chemical mixture, I can't just use water?

I should mention this is a budget grow, so any corners I can cut off, money-wise, is important.

So does it HAVE to be that mixture to properly flush it?

Alternatives?

Doesn't have to be with anything except water.

Cool. Good to know Diesel.

So as for the technique I listed, is that right? What's considered flushing and whats considering just watering?

I be confused on that.

Step 3 would be counterproductive to flushing.

You're flushing to remove nutrients. Don't add any to the water.

They say it takes about 14 days for a plant to "digest" all the minerals it has stored.

Use R/O water if you have it because it contains no nutrients.

Tap water still contains nutrients but is better than not flushing at all.

Oh, so no veggy nutrients like Nitrogen for the last part....

I just said that because 13ettleJuices said to in my journal. Just checking here to see if thats standard flushing protocol.

Now I know.

Dude, PLEASE take anything I say with less than a grain of salt. I have ZERO experience myself. I was just trying to relay some info that I'd read on the boards here as you seemed in need of a prompt reply.

Let me try to make it a bit more straight forward if possible in order to clarify a few misconceptions you may still have.

flush n.
1.
a. A flooding flow or rush, as of water.
b. The act of cleaning or rinsing by or as if by flushing.

You simply pour lots and lots of water into the top of the pot and let it soak into the soil, draining out of the bottom. It should be a deluge of water; that's a lot. The point is to wash away all nutrients and/or wastes from the soil.

It's THAT simple. Don't try to over think it.

As far as doing it "over the course of a day" I was merely relating my own personal experience in that context. It was more of a complaint, you see; as my soil has horrid drainage issues. My apologies for the confusion.

Oh man, I'm sorry. Its just I couldn't find any info on "Flushing" here, so I just took your word. Seemed like you knew exactly what to do, so I followed your advice....

So should I just pour all the water in the pot right now and not do this "every few hours" thing I'm doing now in my journal?

Which one is it: all at once, or a small amount (a gallon) at a time?

Royally Flushed.

When I flush I pour water into the pot until it is about to overflow, then when it drains down through the soil I do it again until I've put 3 to 5 times as much water through the soil.

Do it slowly, not all at once.  Over the course of a day would be just fine, but if it's only a 1 gallon container it really doesn't need to take that long.

If your just doing a routine flush, as in not trying to solve a toxicity problem, adding veg nutrients at the end will be just fine.  If your trying to solve toxic salt build up or the such I wouldn't add it.
