When to flower
    #38616 - 05/24/08 07:40 PM (16 years, 7 months ago)

When is the best best time to switch from fluorescent to HPS?

How far should the budding light be from the plant?

a.) Depends on how tall you want the plant to be amongst other things. If growing from seed anytime after they've shown maturity is ok. You can flower clones at any time as long as they're rooted

b.) 18-24 inches is the norm. You can get them closer if the light is cooled properly.

Just to elaborate on that, maturity is when the plants begin showing preflowers, usually about four to six weeks into vegetative state.

Yep, I'd get a thermometer and find the best location for one's specific situation. I wouldn't assume you'd want the canopy to be any warmer than 80 to 85 degrees (optimal temperature is to some degree relative, depending on factors like level of light, amount of CO2, humidity).

actually, the plant is considered mature when it shows alternating nodes which is possible before preflowers show

When is the best best time to switch from fluorescent to HPS?

Do you grow from seeds of clones? For seeds it is always the best time to switch from fluorescent to HPS. You can also always switch to HPS with clones but you have to place the light high and keep humidity high.

About the best time to start flowering, that depends on how much space you have, the strain and how many plants you have planted per square foot.

The plants don't care, you can start flowering (12/12 light) when the seedlings/clones have roots. Plants will, of course, be smaller when you start earlier.

I start flowering when the leaves of different plants just touch.

How far should the budding light be from the plant?
Rule of thumbs are, but it truly depends on the temperature on the leaves:
400W >15inch
600W >23inch

Buy a thermometer and place it in the shadow, between the tops. Adjust your light based on the temp and how your top leaves look.

You guys are awesome. Thanks. I'm so glad this forum exists now. I've been reading every day. I wouldn't have made nearly as much progress without it. Pictures will be coming soon.

This thread was moved from Indoor Soil Cultivation.

Reason:
More appropriate for the main forum since it is a general question not specific to growing in soil.
