where to start during the construction process
    #385832 - 03/18/10 11:19 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys, I will be moving in a couple months and want to build rooms for some plants. I have all the space I need, enough money to buy/build the supplies, ability to correctly install wiring, build walls ect. My only real "problem" is that I am overwhelmed where to start. Here is my plan so far.....this thread is just for the construction space aspects, will follow with technical questions later

- 30" closet for seedlings (4 shelves, each with own light)
- separate vegatative room
- flowering room
- preparation/storage area

*Does anybody use the grow rooms for drying/curing or another part of the house? (and if so why?)

*I would like to have plants ready to flower as soon previous ones are ready for harvest, should I build the veg room the same size as flowering?

*I only want to run 3000w for flowering so I should keep plant area approx. 4'x12'...correct? obviously larger than that but the green only covers 4x12. Want to do sog's eventually once I get clones

* I will be starting with only a few plants so I can make the mistakes that are inevitable but want to have the potential to increase, I have lots of bagseed to learn with.

I forgot to add that I want to stay away from mylar wall coverings and plan on using soil

Sounds like you're on a good track to me. I'll try to address all those questions, let me know if I miss anything.

I always have my veg rooms a little smaller than the flowering room. the plants double or triple in size when they start flowering so if you have the rooms the same size and fill the veg room before moving them to 12/12 you're gonna have a serious problem on your hands. plan on vegging in a 3x3 area and flowering in a 4x4, that will keep your flowering growth dense enough to not waste light, but not so dense that you're wasting nutrients

a 4x4 area is perfect for a 1KW, so a 4x12 space for 3KW sounds great

As for the mylar, it sucks. Flat white paint or black/white poly works just as well and is WAAYYY easier to work with. Don't worry about that at all.

for your 30" seedling area, that's not height is it? if so I would definitely advise against 4 shelves, that's not nearly enough vertical space when you start factoring in lights and pots etc.

I also forgot to add, have you thought about ventilation yet? that's by far the most important step for a successful grow but for some reason it's usually the last step that gets considered during construction

no it's a 30" wide, 6' tall. How much vertical space per shelf do I need before I put them in the veggie room?

I have ventilation in my mind but needed to figure out the size of rooms first, the ceilings are 8' tall as we speak. I will be building my own scrubbers for the smell. The rooms will be made airtight and light proof.

Your input is very much appreciated, thanks

should I plan ahead for a drying/curing area, part of me says it will be necessary to control odor

That depends on if you're doing a sealed flowering room or not. For a sealed room you'll probably want a drying area just so you can have fresh air exchange to dry/cure the buds, but if you're going to be filtering and expelling the air inside the flowering area then I would personally just dry the buds in there and take advantage of the carbon filter you already have.

I just noticed you said the rooms will be airtight, which is good but keep in mind that means you'll need a split AC system and a dehumidifier, as well as a closed circuit cooling system for your lights and CO2 supplementation. Cost considerably more and is a bit more complex but I think you'll be very pleased with the results.

split ac? as in air control/alternate current/air conditioning?

I have access to dehumidifiers for free.

Split AC as in it cools the intake airand passes the heat to external air through a radiative membrane so you can cool the air in your room without any smell escaping. Keeps the air in your room cool without exhausting anything outside.

Yep you guys got it for the most part. It's pretty simple really.

Here's a company that manufactures AC units specifically for cooling grow ops. they have them designed so they can run while still keeping sealed rooms sealed and vented rooms vented but still smell controlled.

I read about this somewhere and I've been trying to delay flowering because I can't figure how to seal the box to deal with smell

I think you just told me how

Thanks Blalscak

I have the ability to vent the air out of the grow area as long as it's scrubbed (smell) first. What route would you recommend?
