Was doing some reading and got kinda nervous about cultivation penalties. I'm worried about my buddy.
He has a 600W HPS MS cool tube that he has yet to fire up. He was planning on venting into the attic and letting the soffit/roof vents take care of it. He then found that running directly out the wall into a surface mount vent would be much easier to cover up later, damage wise.
Well he was watching some never get busted again videos where they set up cops that were using infrared cameras without a warrant, and the cops raided a house because they saw warm air being vented out. Turned out to be christmas trees under an HID I think. Pretty funny, but also scary.
He lives in a kinda rural area, but strange blacked out helicopters sometimes fly within a rocks throw from his house, (quite often in the summer months).
Could this be paranoid delusion? He always figured they were looking for weed, and has a friend a few hours drive away that is friends with LEOs that really DO take helis up looking for outdoor grows.
Do people really get busted this way? Or is it mostly loose lips that sink ships?
Should he get a smaller wattage? Not worry about it too much? Vent into the attic? Or give up because his love for growing his own natural plant that grows any fucking way is not worth being incarcerated for...
I'm leaning toward paranoid but one can never be too safe with a big brother like ours.
If there were a security forum, I would have posted this there. Seems like the most appropriate place.

I'd say its primarily loose lips that sink ships.
I believe the supreme court has ruled that FLIR technology cannot be used to scan for grow rooms without a warrant. If they've already got a warrant you've got bigger problems than heat signatures.

If I remember right that christmas tree grow was TRYING to poke sticks at the cops and being careless in an attempt to goad them into 'busting' them so they could prove what assholes the cops are.
Also more and more I doubt cops burn helicopter hours trying to catch 600w grows... especially now-a-days.

my computers use more than 600 watts...my computer room area puts off more heat than my grow room i bet

NO kidding man... I was able to justify my whole operation (though it is small) by just utilizing my computer's power saving features

Correct, they were doing a sting on the cops, to prove they were using FLIR cameras without warrants.
And thanks guys, I had pretty much figured its not a big deal, just had a little freakout sesh while looking through my states marijuana arrest records.
